So I finally go around to putting some footage together from the last few years of traveling. Its mostly for my family to see but I thought I would post it here too. Some of the places include White Sands, Glacier, Havasu, Daytona and some others...

Some Random Video from the "Roaming Shutterbug"

In coming weeks I will have more Raptor related and pro-level stuff... even some 3D stuff that I will try and teach you how to view without a 3D monitor!

You sir, are an artist with the lens.
I take well over 100,000 pics of roofing and building envelope issues every year, so photography is a major part of my work.
I've learned to appreciate nature and other things with photos - and try to collect memories with a camera when I can.
That video was nothing short of inspirational to some of us amateur photographers, and I hope to be able to capture perspectives like that in the future.

Very nicely done. Loved the "big" scenes with the very small amount of moving subject matter in them (have no idea what that technique is called), e.g., the bug-on-sand at the beginning.

Cine.. You've completely inspired me to "try" and capture some of my experiences in a similar fashion! What basic equipment would you recommend as a must have?

Thanks guys for all the kind words!
Looking back I wish I had taken more time to do certain things instead of just concentrating on stills but what are you gonna do. Its also hard to juggle family time versus photo time. It is something that takes a bit of time and concentration (video more so than stills) but the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Droid,
What your referring to is called negative space. The more negative space you have, the more your subject pops out at you. The main reason being is that there isn't as much in the image to distract your eye.

JP,
You are surrounded by such a beautiful place its hard to not get inspired! My #1 tip for people taking landscapes no matter what their skill level is time of day. There is "magic hour" when the sun is just coming up or just going down when it is the best time to take pictures. Right when it has gone behind the mountains but there is still plenty of light is the best time. It might not be the most ideal time to be out there, but there is no way around it. Its due to the limitations of cameras not being able to handle the amount of light the sun can dish out. Just so you know, noon is the worst for landscapes... :waytogo:

Pepper,
Its a common editing trick that is more noticeable going from no sound to sound. You would be surprised how many tricks filmmakers can play on you with sound.

Tizzle,
The real question is how deep do you want to go down the hole!? Do you already have a camera?

Only my waterproof Kodak flip style.

A Digital SLR is on my wish list but I'm thinking about stepping up to a decent video camera in the meantime. What are you using for your videos?

Kill the Kodak and go for a Canon - they are really solid and the Powershot series is affordable and takes idiot proof shots and video all in one. Cline will probably recommend something better, but from my years with Olympus, Nikon, Sony, Kodak and Canon - my fav is Canon.

For pure video - decide whether you want an action camera or one of them backyard wedding video things. I went with the Drift HD170, but many of our members have the GoPro and others. These action vid-cams are versatile in being waterproof and sturdy - but have much more limitations with zoom etc.

Cline: I agree with the scenery out here, as well as the ambient lighting from natural sunsets (I have thousands of shots from my bedroom balcony of various sunsets). But in the mountains, when the sun gets to that 'sweet spot', have you any idea how many ******* bugs are out there!?!?! Every breath causes inhalation of at least 4 mosquitoes and a blackfly or two...!

But I agree, natural lighting is the best - I just couldnt get my partner on the tour to get her ass outta bed that early. There's still a few weekends left in summer that I can try and get the optimal shots - however my weekends lately have been solely devoted to whitewater kayaking so I've been a little distracted.
