This is interesting. I did not talk to them on the phone, just via the web submission forms. I still have not pulled the trigger on my tunes yet.
When we were corresponding I told them what I would do with the truck (drive around town, tow a small TT, etc.) they recommended the tow tune as one of the options (I bought 3 tunes initially) - now I will ask them more specific questions regarding the differences. Thanks for the input and research, gives me more research of my own to do.
I’m replying to your initial post. 2020 raptor Screw. 13k miles. Just installed PRX93 this week. I also ordered 91 tow although I never tow, I don’t want to feel unable should the need arise.
I’ve had a couple tunes previously on a 2009 Silverado and a 2013 f150 eco boost. I was skeptical ordering this tune — really skeptical. But everyone acts like it’s such a drastic change my curiosity got the better of me.
In general, I accept that concessions are made in optimizing the throttle response and power. Comments like “this is how it should’ve come from factory” seem silly to me.
If there were no concessions (compared to stock) to tuning a vehicle and adding 100hp and gain 1-2mpg the manufacturer would do it. Or atleast that’s my opinion. But you can’t tow, driving in the rain takes a bit of focus, and in general it’s clear the intention is less well-rounded throttle response in favor of pure power development. Again, my relatively green opinion.
I thought this was going to be like my 13 ecoboost tune (which was also from MPT) a ton of front loaded boost that had the turbos screeching from the initial feather-like depression of the gas only to feel no throttle response up top. Not the case. The power is aggressive, but not nearly as twitchy as I was expecting. But also in saying that, I do feel the need to feather it a bit in the rain, especially when turning right from a dead stop.
In a straight line I am constantly smiling, this feels like a much smaller, lighter vehicle on the throttle. The shifting is also much improved to my surprise. If you’ve driven a CVT, at times it almost seems similar given how closely the gear changes become at medium throttle. But above medium throttle it’s a smile maker. The boost hits hard and without noticeable lag. Sport mode kicks ass. The first time I drove this thing off the lot and opened it up, I couldn’t believe how planted and stable it felt under hard throttle. Man, sport mode is so much cooler with this tune. It feels very aggressive, yet it doesn’t feel like you’re straining the motor.
My expectations have been exceeded in power delivery, smoothness, aggression, and surprisingly in not being too twitchy. I don’t know that I could recommend an improvement anywhere with the 93 PRX.
I know 3 tunes seems to be the most popular but for me changing tunes is a hassle and generally unnerves me. For some reason it makes me feel similar to how I felt downloading songs off Kazaa in college — will this work, will this crash my computer, who knows. My opinion. This tune loaded perfectly and I haven’t noticed anything unusual in 800 miles.
I chose the 91 tow in case I ever find myself in a situation where I need to tow or I can’t find 93. But that will not be frequently if ever.
I thought about the any octane tune but never saw myself using it. If I’m driving somewhere unfamiliar and can’t find 93, I’ll load the 91 tow. The tune loading time was about 5-6 minutes. It takes just as long for me to walk into the gas station and hit the head. I’ll likely never even load the 91 tow.
The best part is that I can hit the throttle in normal drive mode and not feel like I’m leaving power or acceleration on the table by not using sport mode.
Sport mode shifts are much smoother allowing me to “entertain” passengers without them also asking wtf is up with the transmission.
1.2 mpg gain over two tanks of gas via the computer measurement.
Overall I would purchase again, would recommend MPT to anyone looking for more juice. The tune does not seem overly aggressive — the term appropriate comes to mind in considering whether I believe this tune could last the lifetime of the vehicle and give me what I want. Very pleased. This is the first tune that has given me what I wanted.
No other mods. At this time I don’t plan on adding any.
