That's funny my iPod does it every time I start the truck. I figured it was just a crappy interface. Interesting

I bought a SanDisk 64gb flash drive off amazon, 5 star reviews, and have noticed that device indexes every couple of days as well. The device will still play while indexing however so a minor inconvenience to me.

Hey everyone!

Indexing is pretty important if you wish to control your music using voice commands. When a device is plugged into the vehicles USB port, the system will try to read the contents and determine if there are any supported files. SYNC then indexes the media to build the voice commands (e.g. artist, title, track name).

I hope this helps.

Completely understood, But with having 18255 files on my iPod. Using speech for Playlists and Artists works well. But it clearly warns me it cannot do songs due to the number of files. Its just a pain that it indexes every time. I wish it sync could write a check sum to the device so that it doesn't always have to index every time I start the truck.

I have a question for you guys with the indexing issue, how do you get your music and how do you upload them to your phone, MP3 player or thumbdrive? The issue might be the headers in the files themselves, so depending on how they are labeled in your music player it may not have all the information listed so sync has to create the index (or table of cotents so to speak) for media. or it may be the amount of tunes you have, the CPU and RAM configuration may not be able to support anything more than 32gb of flash memory, which was pretty common until recently. I would suggest trying mediamonkey for uploading your tunes to see if that solves it, does work for zune, android and ios. if not try a smaller memory size to see if that works.
