Jesus! A few of you pay more in yearly tax for your Raptor than I do for my house in the middle of an urban area. I think we paid like $1,300 last year in property taxes.

In Florida it’s around $85/year on 12/31 to register a Raptor ($45 or so for normal vehicles). There’s no personal property tax that I’m aware of, except on business property—and there’s a threshold on that that I’ve always been under thanks to depreciation. There’s no emissions testing—thankfully they stopped right before I started driving—and no state income tax. Our insurance rates are a little higher because of fraud and weather, but we’re not Michigan by any stretch.

One thing that sucked is that registration renewals that normally carry over don’t seem to carry over for class. So when I updated the registration on my 350Z for two years and then sold it for the Raptor, I kept my tag, but the registration date changed 6 months and I had to pay fresh for this year. That had pissed me off, along with them upping the costs slightly a few years ago, but after reading this thread I feel quite alright with my $90 mistake.

Normally I’m up with tax laws, even in other states, but a garage tax is new to me. I can’t stand excessive taxes, especially upkeep on property. If I ever leave here I’ll be sure to avoid any state with that BS. I had been considering moving, but this makes me feel better. My family has lived in this city for 5 generations now, but the slow churn of the blue into the only city I can really call home in this state is getting to me. That and I almost get in weekly accidents from no one paying attention anymore and just generally driving like ********. Also, humidity blows.

44.75 + 2.00 it's neat. No other taxes to a car as property?
I do not have a garage, it's pretty expensive to have a house here in LA, so I'm living in condo and we have parking. So I cannot answer this question. :(
Here in Virginia, we pay a 4.15% sales tax when purchased. So on my Raptor, I paid $2,917 in sales tax.

My apologies for the confusion on the “garage tax” - that’s just what we call it. It’s an annual personal property tax that is charged to own or “garage” a car in my county. They charge based on assessed value, which will decrease over time, but when new, you pay through the nose. Past two years I paid over $2,600 a year on the Raptor.

Just renewed mine in PA, $85 a year or you can go with a two year renewal. When you purchase the vehicle you pay a % of sales tax (forget the % right now) on the vehicle cost after rebates, down payment, etc. There is a annual inspection that will run about $40 per year. If you happen to live in a non farming county, they hit you with an annual emissions test as well. Just adding some perspective from another north east state. There is a weight class sticker as well, one time purchase when you initially register the truck, unable to recall the cost, not much though.

Do you guys have personal property taxes or garage taxes as well?
No, but I know some businesses do.
No garage tax, though it is considered as part of the property tax assessment. Which may be because a lot of people in our city rent their garages out for living spaces, which is illegal but hey, this is CA, where a 1200 sq ft house rents for $2200 per month on average here in Santa Barbara county.

JC!!! 2600 is a lot... it's more than 3 times higher than our renewal expenses.
