Dear Sir,
As a sworn reserve sheriff’s deputy and motorist, I have concerns about the advent of non-DOT compliant LED products that directly replace the factory headlight bulbs in motor vehicles. Manufacturers and marketers such as 4x4TruckLEDS.com of Lindenhurst, New York make no mention that their products are not DOT compliant.
As these are not auxiliary lights such as fog lights or driving lights, but rather replace OEM halogen bulbs in the vehicle’s headlights, they represent a traffic safety concern. As the headlights are the primary source of lighting , the use of these LED products may make the vehicle they’re installed in unsafe for other drivers on the road under nighttime conditions.
I believe that these products should be subject to NHTSA regulation, and at the very least should be marked and marketed for off-road use only. I ask that you investigate these products and the way they are marketed and sold, and undertake the administrative and legal actions necessary to assure highway traffic safety.
