I told:

U.S. Department of Transportation
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Washington, DC 20590

Dear Sir,

As a sworn reserve sheriff’s deputy and motorist, I have concerns about the advent of non-DOT compliant LED products that directly replace the factory headlight bulbs in motor vehicles. Manufacturers and marketers such as 4x4TruckLEDS.com of Lindenhurst, New York make no mention that their products are not DOT compliant.

As these are not auxiliary lights such as fog lights or driving lights, but rather replace OEM halogen bulbs in the vehicle’s headlights, they represent a traffic safety concern. As the headlights are the primary source of lighting , the use of these LED products may make the vehicle they’re installed in unsafe for other drivers on the road under nighttime conditions.

I believe that these products should be subject to NHTSA regulation, and at the very least should be marked and marketed for off-road use only. I ask that you investigate these products and the way they are marketed and sold, and undertake the administrative and legal actions necessary to assure highway traffic safety.

"Where was I dishonest? When did I change the subject?"
- When you raised the question of the lights on my truck.
- When you raised the question of the number of posts I've made.
- When you raised the question of the character of the posts I've made.
Don't you read what you write, or think about what you write?
What do those things have to do with your product? What? Exactly.

These techniques are old, old propaganda tricks. Repetitively change the topic to avoid the topic at hand. Put the opponent on the defensive by trying to make the discussion about him. And now claiming innocence when the record is clear for all to see.

You're a dishonest man if you're a man at all, and I'm done with you.

Wow, you really are a ******** aren't you. Sound like a crusty old man from Grumpy Old Men.

The guy never said his lights are legal for road use. That does NOT mean you can't use them on the road if you want.

Getting a ticket? Yeah, right. Good luck with a cop going up under your hood looking for a DOT approved sticker.

You don't want to run the lights don't. You don't want to buy from the guy don't. You are trying to convince the guy to close up shop or change his product labeling because you think it's currently dishonest? Yeah, good luck with that.

*edit* Ahh, I just read your little letter. Not that a reserve sheriff deputy actually has any authority to pull someone over, but when you are talking to real cops how many of them said they have EVER pulled someone over for running non-DOT approved headlights?

. You wanna try my product, PM me your address. I'll send you the product FREE to try out with a promise you come back on here and apologise when you see it's not a crap product and does not blind oncoming drivers.

Wow, guess I should have kept pestering you...LOL $150 in product for a fair review? I'd take that and put them up against the fresh set of Phillips Xtreme vision I fitted to my truck just before my thanksgiving trip.

Of course you made the offer knowing he wouldn't take you up on it...

I looked at the leds, considered a full projector swap and ended up with a good halogen bulb that was a massive improvement over what was in there. I get flashed on occasion with what is in there, I bet I would get 10x the protests with leds.

I am not too concerned about the law but on my mountainous two lanes getting blinded on a very dark dangerous road is a reality and could easily cause an accident. I am concerned about not over driving my lights. When I bought the truck you could easily overdrive the lights. With good bulbs the low beams are pretty safe now. The highs will never reach out like a projector but they widen the pattern which is nice for the suicidal bambis. I just think the leds would cause problems, can't see how they wouldn't.

What's funny is we're 100% within the law to sell our bulbs :)

Snowsled don't get any ideas! lol. Of course if you do try them snow (or have ordered them) and are not happy you know we'll stand behind the product with a money back guarantee. So we're not worried.

Another thing I find funny is some guy on a forum thinks he can shut down my business... I've been doing this years and i've been in the aftermarket lighting industry since 1999... i THINK I know a thing or two about lighting by now and the laws lol. I wonder if he plans to email the DOT about companies like Baja Designs, Rigid Industries, Putco, Hella, KC who all make led lighting products (light bars, pods, headlight bulbs, etc...) to which none of them are legal for road use ... or if he's just trying to start a fight with me because I stood up to his nasty comments... ehh what can ya do. Can't please everybody. Kinda funny that he has nothing better to do then make himself look bad.

Anytime you replace a bulb you need to align it. If you go with LED/HID/Higher power halogens you'll want to align your headlights.

Also fair warning. If you go with a higher power halogen bulb make SURE you upgrade the wire harness or double check the wiring. In the old days (well about 15 years ago) there was a HUGE Problem with people upgrading their halogens to more powerful ones and causing issues. The wiring harnesses could not handle the higher load and you'd get melted wires/harnesses on fire. Ask me how I know (1.. I worked in the industry as a manufacturer of halogen bulbs and 2.. i melted my own harness during test way back when).

This is why, at least in the old days, you saw upgraded wiring harnesses for the halogens to prevent this. NOW adays however I bet auto manufacturers have beefed up the headlight harnesses to prevent this from happening. Since every manufacturer is now selling higher power bulbs it only made sense for the vehicle manufacturers to do this.

LED's don't have this issue, less power.
HID's don't have this issue either, as they use a relay harness to pull power from your battery (and if your HID kit does NOT do this, find a new kit, a real HID kit needs to pull power from the vehicle's battery and uses a relay harness)

Thanks Smoothie... what's funny is we don't have to re-label anything... our packaging has been labeled correctly since day 1 :) We're actually better labeled then some other well-known brands who are missing CORRECT labeling (this is why we have a LOT of Canadian customers because we're able to sell our products in Canada since it's all labeled correctly)

Don't you wish that you actually knew what you're talking about?

Silly little boy. I live in a small, rural western town in a very big county, and both PD and SO officers write citations for no headlights and blinding headlights.

Look if you want to pay $150 to run illegal headlights, go right ahead. And then smile joyfully when you get cited or somebody figures out where you live and breaks your headlights for you.

I don't see any indication on your web site that these LEDs are non-DOT compliant. Did I miss something?
