The bottom perch was properly seated? When I rebuilt my gen 1 kings the bottom spring seat was kinda cocked and caused the same issue

Received the replacement spring this week. Got it swapped today,
The spring was bent, it was out about 1” at the center from end to end. New spring is in and centered, so far it has clear margins around the shock body.
Most likely just a weak spot in the spring, or a bad heat treat
