Mustangs , Camaros , Vettes , only have to bolt on a Supercharger Or Turbo kit to Compete or outperform a hellcat . Gen 2 Raptor that is not possible. How many mustang GT 's would they sell if it got rid of the 5.0? Sales would collapse overnight. Ford is Limiting the Raptor horsepower potential by sticking with a V6.

No need to speculate on what would happen if a V6TT replaces a V8.

In 2014 Ford made 22k Raptors and according to threads on this website, many of those were sold under MSRP and quite a few went at invoice if a buyer did a little calling around.

2017 Raptor production was delayed 3 months, but in the remaining 9 months Ford cranked out 23k units. And given all the outrage on this website, nearly all those V6TT Raptors were sold with eye-watering ADMs.

22k V8 Raptors sold at a discount versus 23k V6TT Raptors sold at $10k+ over sticker.

Yeah, looks like sales definitely collapsed when Ford replaced a V8 with a V6TT.

Apples and oranges. Part of the reason for the premiums was the built up demand caused by missing two full model years and the production delays sure didn't help. When the Gen 2 is in its 5th year of production, it won't be trading at a premium, I assure you.

*edit* - I also think most of your "data" is bogus. I sure didn't get my truck at invoice. It was mostly rural dealers doing that, just like today. And when there was no Raptor, used Gen 1s were selling at a premium to sticker price. That was just basic market forces at work, much like when the Gen 2 first came out.

Gap or no gap, the market would not have supported ADMs if the V6TT was undesirable. We are nearly 2 years in and most buyers feel lucky if they can find a MSRP deal.

By every metric the G2 has been a financial home run for Ford and its dealers. There is certainly no evidence the V6TT hurt sales and 2018 numbers will get close to matching the first 3 years of G1 production combined! (helped by 15 months of production, but still an impressive feat).

ADMs are coming down, but at some point in 2019 the G2's production totals will exceed all five years of G1 production and I bet most dealers will still be insisting on ADMs. And lets not forget the G2's sticker price is a lot higher than the G1's too.

The guys who brought us the V6TT Raptor are getting huge bonuses and promoted, not fired.

If Ford comes out with a gen 3 Raptor and it’s superior to the TRX... I’ll consider it.

It has to have comparable power and performance.

I don’t know if you’ve looked lately but the dodge interiors put ours to shame.

Ford needs to up the ante there as well.

Who said anything about me selling my 17 raptor? I enjoy collecting spirited vehicles.

A hellcat ram will look nice next to the gen 3, assuming it’s produced.

Would I trade the gen 2 in on a gen 3? Yes. Would I trade the gen 2 in on a Ram TRX? No. You don’t sell your favorite legos to buy new ones.

Again, it's apples and oranges. The Gen 1 literally created a whole new market. The Gen 2 benefits a lot from that.

The Gen 2 has been a very successful offering, no doubt. But it's selling well in a market that was created by the Gen 1 and with no competition. And, as you have already pointed out, in its current form, it's just not going to survive a challenge from Dodge and Chevy. So was it financial home run or a strategic mistake? Only time will tell.

You'll rarely, if ever find a vehicle that beats the competition in every metric, at least not if you want to keep the cost relatively equal. Manufacturers have a target price in mind and need to choose how they spend it. If you want a truck that is better on road, better off road, have more power, more torque and a nicer interior, don't expect it to cost anywhere near whatever it is you're comparing it to.

Agree. It was the success of the G1 that convinced Ford management to pour so much R&D money into the G2.

The biggest risk is if the Chevy Trailboss and Ram TRX bolt-on projects are successful, Ford could imitate them by cutting back on G3 engineering and turning the Raptor into a bolt-on off-roader too.

Here's to hoping those bolt-on trucks fail miserably so the fully engineered Raptor lives on.

So was it a home run or a mistake??? Are you really that dumb, or just trying to get a response.

It's already a huge success. Because Dodge may or may not produce a competitive truck in 4 years, (repeat.... In 4 years!), will not change that.

I used to think you were just a troll. But now I'm thinking you are just not that smart.

It’s a huge success to people who are willing to pay 70grand for a truck that they will rarely if ever take off road or abuse in any way. The only way it is a home run is to an reenergized economy with new America first policies. I find it funny that the head of ford got canned in a sex #metoo scandal. The gen 2 is just not a spectacular truck except for the street. When my old gen 1 dies I don’t know what I’ll do but unless ford steps up the v8 and ends this smaller displacement twin turbo crap then I probably will try and figure out how to rebuild a ford boss 6.2 liter unless of course they drop the 7 liter in a gen 2
