To me they both have their appeals.
Gen 2:
- More pronounced look
- Physical key + mechanical gauges
- No EGR system (means no cooler that will pack with carbon and potentially clog)
- Better aftermarket support
- Factory front LSD (only early year gen 3s have it from what I've seen)
Gen 3:
- 2kw inverter
- 5 link rear suspension + coil springs
- Better tech and more ergonomic interior
- No worries about cam phaser issues
I bought my gen 2 late 2020 for sticker. When the gen 3s came out less than a year later I looked at how much it would cost to make the jump into a similarly optioned truck as my gen 2 and it was over 15k difference in sticker prices. As much as I would love to have the 2kw inverter in my gen 2 there's nothing else that's really a huge pull for me to spend that much more money on a truck that isn't all that different.
They're both great trucks, but if you already have a gen 2 it doesn't make sense to me to move to a gen 3 unless you like burning money and like the gen 3 enough to justify the expense.
