I was "that guy" today driving "too fast" in the snow

Most people don’t know how to drive and pay attention at the same time. In snow that really shows. Following too close, going too fast for the conditions they are in and not having properly maintained tires. Tires are everything in this snow!

I think you did great!

In Texas it is illegal to drive the speed limit in the left lane... if you are impeding other traffic. Even if both vehicles are WAY above the speed limit. Driving the speed limit is NOT a defense to prosecution. Unfortunately most asshats don't know this and believe they have a "right" to the left lane. Driving a motor vehicle in Texas is also a privilege and NOT a right.

On the flip side don't know what the law is where you are. However, hope you gave them ample time and opportunity to move out of the way. Here it's illegal to impede traffic (driving too slow). Unless it is as fast as you feel you can safely navigate the road (again, slow traffic move right if more than one lane).

On another note, we've had many ice storms here over the years (for Texas anyway), and I've never had a problem. Then again I've always owned performance AWD and 4WD vehicles, and did not out drive their capabilities.

That’s good to know. I have a very good friend, former deputy in VA who cited a bicyclist for obstructing traffic on a country, 2 lane road, a solid 15-20mph under the limit. Got a conviction too.

I’ve got a lot of elevated ramps and interstates where I’m at in TX, and, the pavement ain’t the best in the rain here, so I’m respecting it. If someone’s got more pace than me, I’m happy to let them throw the block for me. OTOH, you Texans do appreciate a good clip on the interstates... and most other roads.

From a southeast Texas life resident POV and considering we don’t typically get ice/snow storms with multiple days @ sub-32* weather, I had no problem going 20-25 mph in the more traveled left lane today (35 mph limit) and being overly cautious with the wife and young kids in the truck. Of course we had a Raptor blow by us in the right snow/ice covered lane going 45ish who nearly 360d at a busy stop light when he tried to stop / turn, I thought he was a d-bag, while it’s great that Raptors have extreme capability, it’s not always about that when other non-4wd cars filled with family’s are on ice filled roads down here and the majority are not experienced in the snow, so sometimes it may make more sense to show some restraint and get to your destination slower.

My absolute favorite is the younger person, leaning forward and hugging the steering wheel as hard as they can, shaking their head as if to say "I'm not getting over" with their hazards on doing 25 in the left lane, on a spare tire. Favorite. Hazards on in the fast lane, perfect.

We see these people all the time. Usually with California plates.

Or Texas. LOL What I like is when they get in "the mountains" OMG 45 in a 65 on the curves. Then you get a straight passing lane and they speed up to 80. Then back to 45 on the curves. If rocket launchers on cars were a thing, there would be a lot of wreckage up here.

I just drive from San Antonio to Dallas Ft. Worth Airport yesterday in a **** of shit rental 2021 Blazer front wheel drive! 4+ hours in that thing to then return it at the airport and get in my truck and drive the 30 min home best thirty minutes of the day! The truck just loves to be driven in the proper mode with some throttle. It just works!
