Interesting, never thought about putting my yak on top of my bed! But mine is 12.5' long, so it may not work out as well. Ummmm...

I'd be more worried of it going through the rear window than anything.

Does Ford make a cap to cover the holes?

I was looking at cutting mine to add stakes for hauling a canoe for duck hunting. But I don't want to leave it on there all year. I also don't want some ugly holes in the bed/rail liner either.

I understand these are tie down rings but what is the attraction to using tie downs that are up on top of the bed rails? I see the kayak thing and personally, I'd put the kayak inside the bed and tie it down in there. I just wonder why there's a need for tie downs up high?

Based on experience the best places to tie things down on the truck are LOW and to the bed floor if possible (there are rail systems, etc. that provide such capabilities).

I run chain between the stock tie down locations in the bed and can pretty much tie anything down to them.

There's a whole thread on tie down options including these rings:

Can these be used just for "hole plugs?" Have them removable?

The reason I ask is because I want to cut out the holes to use the stake pockets for a homemade canoe rack out of lumber for duck season. Then to "plug" the holes once I remove the rack?

I went ahead and bought some tie downs form here: Truck Accessories | Pickup Bed Products

Then I went to Home Depot and bought a new Dremmel tool. I didn't measure, I just eyed the stake pockets and started cutting with the cut-off wheel. I then used some small pieces of wood which were glued to the underside of the bed rail using Gorilla Glue.

This is a "two beer" project...made much easier with the Dremmel. The tie-downs are very easy to install and remove. I plan to use these as a type of "plug" to cover the stake pockets. My next project is to build a wooden canoe rack for duck season that will fit down in the stake pockets. I doubt I'll ever use these tie-downs, but like I said, they'll make a nice plug.

Did you ever make the canoe rack? Would like to see pics...
