So i finally finished up installing SW's LT headers with the help of @MobileBeats and his write up (and the moral support of many others)...it was a true pain in the ass but got them in. I finally got a chance to drive her for a longer stretch today, with the true duals and s tube muffler, the shit is insanely loud...love it, sounds great, but with a 7 month old and a wife that hates loud cars, i may need to change it up...but that's for a different thread - though i was thinking about taking out the SW mufflers and throwing in some magnapacks.

regardless. when i initially turned her on, i noticed a strong gas smell coming from the engine bay. first thing i did was pop the hood and noticed that some bolts had come loose on the passenger side. 1 had completely come out on the drivers side - if i even ever put it in is the real question (unfortunately, i can't reach this one since it's in the middle, bottom row). i pulled into the garage and turned off the engine for a while to let her cool off. i turned her back on and found that the passenger side, with loose top bolts, was spitting out a little bit of black soot and smelled of gas. drivers side, nothing (i was surprised).

so i torqued the bolts down after letting everything cool down. took a drive about 40 miles north of me, all highway and didn't noticed any smell in the cab. didn't notice a gas smell on the outside either, but i do hear a distinct thumping, almost like a "putputputputput" coming from the engine.

my thought is to pull these out throw in the stock gaskets along with some RTV and see if it helps (possibly use some stg8 bolts). then i'l do something about the mufflers...don't know if i can take that much drone all the way down to NC in late august.

anybody have a similar issue with their headers at any point?

Get some brand new Ford OEM exhaust gaskets from the dealer. You have to have some sort of a gasket between the heads and manifolds.

I used the aluminum rtv provided by SW. If I do take them out I'll be putting in the OEM gaskets along with the rtv....still have them and only a few hundred miles on them.

SW recommends just RTV or a combination of the factory gasket and RTV.

I did factory gaskets and rtv...check your front 02,s and make sure they are not backing out at all. I had to tighten the one on my passenger side after a few months. It was starting to back out and leak

As stated, with SW, a common mistake is people use the RTV sealant they send with no gasket. This plain does not work, and you should get a new set of OEM gaskets when you install them.

I have had my headers on since 11 when I got my truck. instructions were to use their rtv sealant . that's what I did, even after talking to customer support. works fine on mine, no leaks. been to 2 snoball events. I check the bolts a few times always tight. instructions do say in conjunction with a gasket or by itself
