Is there a big difference between a helmet that is DOT approved and/or Snell?

I am shopping for some helmets but want to try them on to make sure I get the fit. Found this that is close to me but don't see Snell ratings.

Ya I have been through Gary a few times, usually going as fast as possible. First time was by accident and just got off the highway to get gas. I said to myself I didn't see the exit sign for downtown Baghdad. But yes I should have picked up on the sarcasm, but maybe they do have good BBQ!

Check out the Bolded items from Page 1:


• 100% sober driving only-A track official will be checking.
• Only Driver and Co-driver allowed in the vehicle. No passengers allowed in back seat
• Everyone in your vehicle must have a filled out waiver. NO Exceptions
• Helmets snell2000 and higher Approved are required 100% of the time while on track
• No loose in cab/bed items. Tools, drink bottles, garbage, trail gear, etc. must be removed or properly secured and stowed.
• Hands/Limbs must be kept in vehicle at all times!
• Do not venture off the set track.
• Alcohol consumption is allowed after you are done driving for the day.
• Illegal drug use will not be tolerated at any time
• Know the limitations of your driving ability and your Raptor in the conditions.
• No Malicious destruction of property allowed. IE. No Doughnuts on track
• No Littering
• Everyone in your vehicle must have a filled out waiver. NO Exceptions!

Helmets allowed: Snell 2000 and higher Motocross, SA rated, M rated.
Helmets not allowed: All others

I decided I didn't want to take a chance and drive all the way up there and told "Nope turn around buddy". I went to a local shop just now and ended up getting this one. Snell 2010 approved! Gave it to me for the same price online.

Good call. IMO Full face is a much better choice over an open face helmet for track/offroad duties.
