Gen 2 SCAB makeover…totally not ripping off Geoff’s 2.5 build!

Crank and main journals look good to me, but I’ll get ‘em cleaned up and mic’d out, along with the rest of the block (cylinders, etc.) by a machine shop to be sure.





I’m pretty sure the cylinders will just need a light hone, but again, will have someone who does this for a living take a look first.

Edit: And yes, I removed the piston oil squirters after this pic!

Oh yeah, the turbo oil feed in-line filters that screw into the block also looked pretty good considering the mileage, but will put in new ones regardless:

Quick update: Well, the local machine shop that I’ve used in the past no longer accepts engine/automotive work; in fact, no longer does business with the public…purely business-to-business; mostly oil and gas companies.

Damn.

Back to square one. Looking locally, but I’d be willing to ship or travel to have someone good work on my short block. Maybe Mountune?

I’m sure RMB does great work, but no way I’m rolling the dice with him and his ****** up “business model” right now.

Speaking of the valve covers, I looked closely, but cant see any cracks whatsoever. These are the spots where I had oil pooling on the LH cover:

Guess I could just try new gaskets, but if I’m gonna go to the effort to clean and paint ‘em, I think I’ll just start with new.

take a super close look with a magnifying glass to confirm- it’s always on the driver side and difficult to see yet always in the same spot along the perimeter of the PCV tumor - timing chain zone

Maybe try asking Trey down at Comal Truck right there in NB or the guys at Texas Shock Works in Hutto or even up in Famers Branch is Texas Motorworks maybe one of those would know someone reliable?
I wouldn't do RMB.

Also, talked to Dave at Headgames earlier today, and cleared up the paperwork issue with my order…looks like mine and another had commingled info. All good now, definitely have the SI valves going in.

Dave may also have a line on a tuner for SCT vs the Cobb Access port. I’m still kind of leaning towards Cobb just because they’re only an hour away in Austin in case I have issues, but understand that’s old think.

Most tuning is done online now anyway.

Just my 2 cents....I have worked with 5star, MPT, Adam at ZFG, and Win @GooseTuned . Win is so easy to work with and always responds to emails, text or even my phone calls. And we have been through quite a few of those. His tuning jam up and has been the best. I just wished he tuned LS motors too!! Haha

Glad you got the parts list worked out. However, right now I would stick with Cobb and Goosetuned. It’s not a fanboi thing. There’s a solid reason why so many people use him. Swear to Jebus, I’d give up 50 hp for the headache free, instantaneous experience alone.

This brings up a decision you'll need to make pretty soon. Headgames works closely with big name Coyote 5.0L builders and legacy Ford tuners... Those guys are obviously all in on the SCT/HPT platform due to the plethora of controls and accessible tables. There is no doubt this is a more capable platform and in some instances or engines that may be an advantage - especially in complex ford tuning like an ecu-swapped 2023 f150 raptor, bronco or ranger raptor... or even gen1 ecoboosts which arent supported by cobb. On the other hand it might not always be a good thing as the oem calibration is complex and you can dial yourself into oblivion (many of the tables will say "unitless vs unknown" or something crazy to decipher). I believe Cobb takes a different approach and blends numerous tables, simplifying the unnecessary and amplifying the key aspects that matter for 99% of enthusiasts. Ultimately Ive had great experiences with both systems on different vehicles over the years. my 2019 f150 has an mpt tune Ive loved for many years. and my 2017 raptor project has a cobb in it with goosetuned maps. The trust and relationship you have with the person who is actually calibrating is key

my initial impression is the goose trans tune is stand out excellent. I can't wait to get it back together and get more seat time, i will report back on the engine tune
