Was the fluid ever changed? Worn out gear oil is the primary cause of differential bearing wear/damage.

Why would he have it changed before 72k?

Mine pooped out around the same time. Weird.

I got lucky! Warranty replaced both front and rear differentials at 86k.

Remember manufacturer’s suggested is under perfect conditions… and they mean perfect! Otherwise look at severe, which in the really real world equates to “average”.

It should be changed between 30k and 50k depending on use case. Also, if the axle is submerged in water (boat launch, off road) the fluid will be contaminated, resulting in failure.

My rear end started making noise at 40k, very mild. I took it in twice and the dealership said it was fine. At 59k, I took it to another dealership, and they said rear end. Now I have a new ring and pinion and all bearings and seals for rear end. They also heard noise from the front end and replaced both fronts bearings and seals.....all under warranty.
