You might want to look into that. There’s still a linkage to the transmission on all of Ford’s automatics unless you have the dial shifter.

Why? Isn't all of the shifting under computer control? Maybe they saved a few pennies given that the $500 switch was already there. Dunno.

The shifting of the gears is computer controlled, but you still have to select the range with physical action unless there is an electronic actuator. There is no such device on these transmissions so a manual lever is still employed.

Okay. So that's is forward and backwards, right? Range as in high or low would be the transfer case, which wouldn't have a mechanical connection.

Range is a term that can be used to describe Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive. It can be applied to transmissions as well as transfer cases.

So those are cable operated in the 10spd we’ve got? Kinda makes sense if you’ve ever parked it on a slope w/o the ebrake. It chunks out pretty hard.

Just bought a 2011 GT500 that takes a key, that's just weird to me now.

That's the first year Ford went from FE to AL block in the Shelby, good pick

I like having a key....one COULD argue Porsche is the ultimate driver's car (one COULDN'T argue that in BMWs favor any longer either lol) - Porsche's come w/ a key....& they make you stick it in on the left side of the wheel - odd.

I test drove new Ford SD trucks - they have a mechanical column shift lever - appreciate the "truckish" feel to it, frees up space in center console area, also good place to leave hand occasionally.....will admit starting to look a lil outta place b/c the shifter is comically close to one of the air vents lol

I kinda agree with him, actually. My wife's car has push button start and my truck doesn't. The push button start has it's disadvantages, too. I'd call it a wash for convenience. Ford gouges you for it, it's more stuff to break, and it's a security risk. I can always unlock the door to pop the hood with my old-school key, even if the battery fails. Given a choice, I will opt out, even if the price is the same.

From a convenience perspective, how is it a wash? You can also unlock and pop hoods with a failed battery on a push button system.

Porsche has offered an identical keyless entry and ignition feature called "Entry & Drive" since at least 2008.
