Ford put 400 miles on my Raptor during warranty work

I just got my Raptor back from Ford after it was given to them to fix the adaptive cruise control, door locks and a mirror motor.

I went in to pick it up today and noticed that they had put 398 miles on it over the last few days! I asked the service tech why and he explained it was because he lives 80 miles away and has a long commute. I have dash cam of all of it. It really sounds like a weekend road trip to me but I have yet to go through the video.

They explained the problem was intermittent which isn’t really correct. I went in last week to show them the problem and it occurs immediately. There is no technical reason to need to drive 400
F%#*ING miles on my brand new truck.

To top it all off, they didn’t fix the door locks or mirror motor and they used up a ton of gas and didn’t replace it! It’s also a mess from their little road trip.

Has anyone else had this happen? I am not sure what to do at this point.

I’d go up the chain of command as high as you can go. Ridiculous that someone would take your truck home...period! Total abuse and you deserve a lot more than a free oil change or a few bucks. I’d be seriously pissed. Guarantee those 400 miles weren’t nice easy highway miles. And since you have video, I’d threaten a media storm. You’ve got em by the balls...begin the squeeze. You are in control.

More than likely you don’t need a lawyer, if the video is bad bad bad , share it with the dealer owner in a private meeting depending on dealer size and if owner will meet with you. Don’t waste time with managers.

first figure out what you want and be reasonable...... something fair yet something that will satisfy you and in the realm of possible that the owner would see eye to eye with. Be calm yet firm and be prepared to sign a NDA and never release the footage. Its your leverage. Play the cards wise.

This is the best advice I’ve received. I am struggling to come up with something fair. Guess I’ll have to really think it over.


Worst case scenarios I just release the footage on YouTube and if I do even half as good as the other videos of mechanics ******** around, pulling in $50k of add revenue to fix my Raptor shouldn’t be too difficult.

Drjacks, I sent you a pm. Hold off on posting it , once you do nearly all leverage and negotiating comes to a end and your exposure to what can be a crippling lawsuit increases tenfold despite you being the victim, depending on the ownership and situation some would and will file. Its a bad PR move but they also feel if its public they don’t have much to lose, at a minimum you would have to retain representation which would cost you several thousand right out the gate. I have had similar situations with other mfgs and also dealt with a dirty ford dealership as recently as Jan 2020 , one of the reasons I’m driving a 2020 raptor right now and no longer a 2018. I have also been on the initiating end of libel lawsuits and walked away from each instance collecting a judgement and teaching a lesson.


Be cool and think it out , I can help you navigate this with ease. But again you have to be reasonable, the video would have to be really awful to demand a buyback or get yourself in a new vehicle.

Try to stay calm and schedule a viewing with the owner first.

I sympathize with your problem, I too would be PO’d.
Crunchtime2k has given you great advice, stay calm and stick to a plan.

People are too quick to post up their issues before trying to resolve these in a one on one basis first.

Likely, (and hopefully) you had a rogue employee and the dealer will go above what is necessary to satisfy you (but within reason). New set of tires, probably unlikely- a starting point of reference might be IRS mileage guidelines ~.58 mile. Good luck.

A libel lawsuit would require that you provided some sort of false information. You see the truth is an absolute defense in any sort of libel. Now if you post the video and make false claims, that's a problem. You see the dealer did in fact put 400 miles on your truck. This is not libel liability in any case as it is a fact. Watching the video puts the dealership at risk but it's not libel as it is again fact. Stating the dealer representative jumped the truck 75 feet through the air, without video is libel. Tell the truth show the video to the dealer and let them make an offer. You see in the negotiation after you show the video, the next one to talk is the loser. They may offer you 10 times more than you might otherwise ask.. If it were me the dealer would be providing a 10 year 100k mile warranty with 0 deductible for free. But that's me...

Tell them you want them to cover your truck payment.
I would assume you didnt authorize a pee on(tech) to drive the truck home to an unsecured location.
Personally I only ever ok'd service manager or the master technician to drive my truck home

I think you misread my post , its about two different things.
