Ford Changes Engine Oil Weight for 6.2L

I was doing some research and noticed Ford changed the recommended oil weight for the 6.2L V8 in 2016 to 5W-30. In previous years, it was 5W-20. Anyone know if Ford made changes to the 6.2L V8 in 2016 to warrant such a change? @MTF @FordTechOne

There is not a concern. I just found it interesting that Ford changed the weight after the 6.2L had been out for years and was already proven as a engine. I couldn’t find any information whether or not Ford changed something on the engine.

The stock HP and TQ numbers are not that far off from a Gen 1. So I don’t know why you would say the change isn’t really applicable to the Gen 1. Lol the Raptor having 27 more HP doesn’t change the engine that much from its Super Duty form.

Think the 27 horsepower would be tuning only or internal changes as well? I believe dodge de-tuned the 5.7 In the 2500’s.

Not sure why the 6.2 required 5W-20 in the first place. 5W-20 is a compliance viscosity; it only exists to improve fuel economy. On a 6.2, which isn't even rated for fuel economy in the Super Duty, 5W-20 is pointless. I can't say for sure, but I highly doubt there were any changes to the engine internals in 2016; they most likely came to the realization that 5W-30 is the more suitable oil and changed the requirement accordingly.

I know the oil squirters and the 5W-20 play a big role in the Raptor's engine for cooling.

I haven't looked at HP numbers on the other 6.2L in years.
I remember them being all under 400 HP.
So I guess Ford did something to 2015-2016 and up 6.2L

I was thinking the same thing. So would you not recommend running 5W-30 on the Gen 1? Because 5W-20 is what Ford prescribes for the Gen 1 too. 5W-20 and 5W-30 have the same viscosity cold temp rating, but 5W-30 has a higher viscosity heat rating than 5W-20. I would think 5W-30 would be better.

I don’t know why Ford prescribes some of the fluids that they do. The rear ends on the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 are the same. But for the Gen 1, Ford recommends 75W-140. For the Gen 2, Ford recommends 75W-85. Go figure.

The HP and TQ numbers never changed from what I researched. The HP is under 400 as they are rated for 385. But the Gen 1 is only 411. So not a big difference.

5w-20 and 5w-30 are interchangeable in my opinion. Nearly every Ford runs 5w-20 for fuel economy only, but in reality you can run whatever weight you want within reason. Unless you are in an extreme climate or have an engine that is sensitive to oil weight (5.4), then run what you are comfortable with.

I’m still running the 5w-20 brown water because I don’t see a need to change

Ford does state in the regular 2014 F-150 manual that 75W-140 in the rear. But actually if you look at the 2014 Raptor Supplement owners manual, Ford changes it to 75W-85. I checked some of my workorders as the dealership has opened my rear end several times, they used 75W-140. I will say something next time it needs to be opened.
