This is in relation only to Folsom Lake Ford Service department. I have not had any issues with Folsom Lake Ford Fleet Service and Repair.

At 135K My 2018 Raptor started making the classic cam phaser rattle—nothing dramatic, just its way of saying, "Hey, I’m special!" Other than that, it ran like a dream. At about 155K, the rattle began to get worse and the engine threw 2 codes saying that the cam phasers were not syncing up. Other than that, still running great. But...just in case, I had it towed, rather than keep driving it.

Took it to Folsom Lake Ford Service for a fix, got a $4,500 quote. Cool, that's fair. Then, a few hours later, I get the call: "Sooo… we pulled the oil filter and, uh, surprise! You actually need a whole new engine. That’ll be $14,500!"

Seemed a little extreme, so I sent my oil to Blackstone Labs for a second opinion. Turns out? Engine was totally fine—no undue metal, no issues, just exactly what they'd expect from an engine with 5000 miles on the oil.

Are they crooks or just inept? I don't really see a third option. A $10K miss, is pretty far off target.

If I hadn’t double-checked, I’d be out $10K and a whole lot of tears. So, let’s just say… I wouldn’t exactly recommend them.

I had EXCELLENT service at Folsom Lake Ford. Jim did my cam phasers under CA emissions warranty and went to war with a 3rd party insurance company for me, for two weeks, and got me a new 10R80. Sorry you had a bad experience with them. I recommend them to everyone.

So what did they found in the oil filter?

Is it possible large metallics were found in the oil filter that wouldnt show up in an oil analysis?!

That's my thought too.
What was their reasoning for needing a new engine?

Edit: Has the truck been fixed and still running fine? Or is it still needing new phasers?
Where are you in the repair timeline?

Yup ford service departments are insanely corrupt and incompetent. Sorry for your ordeal it’s way worse than mine . Hope things work out for you. As someone once said that type of incompetence takes planning and it’s not random.

NorCal Off-road, note, this is typical.

The service department was able to bill Ford corporate for the work under warranty, so the service writer was able to get their $$$ without milking the customer.

The dealerships don’t care who they get there money from, as long as they get it.

The dealerships making money on warranty repair and recall is typical, all across the board, regardless of company. That is how much of any service department gets paid, especially now that vehicles are generally more reliable. Poor techs at toyota have to scrabble for almost all their work doing low paying recall work.

Only difference with warranty repair is that the dealerships are accountable to corporate if they do things under warranty.

On automotive engines, large metalics are caught by the oil pickup screen in the pan, to protect the oil pump and filtration system, so never even make it to the oil filter.
