On automotive engines, large metalics are caught by the oil pickup screen in the pan, to protect the oil pump and filtration system, so never even make it to the oil filter.

Are you sure? I heard with all the nickel additives in oil these days they had to remove the pickup screen. I mean I've looked at my oil pickup the last couple times I changed my oil and it was clean, so I just took it off. I am relying on the intake filter to catch any debris floating around in the engine. Well, and the cabin filter.

You typically pull the pan when you change the oil? You are seriously hardcore. I dare say, most of the rest of the human race drains the oil via the drain plug, changes the filter and puts new oil back in through the filler neck...if they want to be really fancy, they might even use a funnel.
