So I gave up on the DeeZee nutsert, and tried this approach. MUCH easier and definitely seems like I won't have to worry about it anymore.

Cool! Glad I could help. I just installed one using this method on my Dad's '10 F-150 and it's holding up well also. I haven't had a problem with mine since I did this so hopefully it's a long term solution for all of us.:party28:

Having bought one of the first set of EZ Down,
I have a different style nut that you have to insert sideways then turn a 1/2 turn and hold in position till you tighten it down so far I haven't had a problem.

But nice fix if you have the newer ones

Huge thanks to the OP for this idea. This was my 3rd (and last) time replacing the ball past after it came loose in the 1 year I've had my Raptor.

I originally used a 21 inch piece of wood, it was too long. Ended up using a paint stir stick, right length but I'd suggest something a little sturdier as I snapped it upon removal.

Once again, huge thanks!

THANK YOU PRYBAR!!!

I was hesitant about getting this part based on all the complaints until I read this post....I did not even try the nutsert. I just took apart the tailgate and used the nut as you described - even copied your wrench "extension". Simply brilliant solution!!!

Awesome writeup. Just installed my new deezee this morning using this method exactly as described. That nutsert is a POS!

i had a different problem. i installed the assist on the right side of the tailgate.wrong! the tailgate would lift out of the holder when lowered. so i called dee zee and asked if they could send me another ball thingy for the piston arm. much to my suprise they sent me a whole new tailgate assist. thank you dee zee .

Just so you don't feel left out, I did the same thing. I will probably be doing this on Friday, because that is my truck play day.
