Well I had mine into the dealer, 250$s later, they assure me the tranny is fine. The tech confirmed he could hear this sound, which only happens at the 30mph shift point going up, but says the tranny is not the cause. Next step is hooking up the truck for audio to track the noise. What a PITA.

Thanks for the update, kolibri. Please PM your name, VIN, current odometer reading, dealer, and best daytime phone number, and I'll gladly look into this further to see how I can help. Talk to you soon!

Well looks like this is an iwe issue. The ford dealer has diagnosed the issue as iwe losing vacuum under acceleration. This lets the iwe engage the diff in effect. Hats off to the tech, he could hear it even when i couldnt. The engagement at speed makes a clunk in this case that sounds like its from the passenger wheelwell. On the upside, an iwe and a vacuum check valve is cheaper than a tranny. There was a note made that this may be why my mileage dropped off a bit too.

kolibri, did you have any uneven tire wear because of the IWE engaging?? It seems like the tire might "bounce" down the road on that side with it being partially engaged?? I have some really weird tire wear that I can't explain (what I call paddling, every other tread wearing away, so your tire looks like a paddle wheel). I already bought a new alignment and 2 new tires because my dealer said that it must be an alignment issue.

i have had that, but not with this problem. i had that very thing happen, but since having my shocks rebuilt i swapped tires and that wear issue hasnt come back. i had this iwe problem for at least 3000 miles now, and the tires (stock) are fine. the odd wear on every second tread was on duratracks. very noticable for sure. i cant say 100% it was because the shocks wre bad, but like i say, since the rebuilds the problem hasnt coe back.

Hi 2manytrucks,

I'd recommend getting a second opinion at a different Ford Dealership. You can find some options by entering your ZIP code here: Ford Dealers | Locate a Ford Dealer Near You | Ford.com How many miles are on your truck? Are the new tires wearing the same way?

Crystal

Crystal I have 43k on the clock. I need to get it back in to the dealer to have them diagnose this problem.

with 43k on the clock there is a high probability that my shocks are toast. In fact I was noticing this week that the ride was getting much worse and that I could feel every little bump. Thinking it was the tires only and not a combination of things, that probably explains why I am chewing up the tires in this weird fashion.

Well it irritates me to say the repairs have not worked. Under mild acceleration this problem is quiet enough i didnt hear it, but on the first long drive, schhhhhlunk was back. Iwe replaced, didnt fix it, vacuum system checked, disnt fix it. The noise only seems to happen between 30-40mph, the harder you accelerate rhe louder it is. If 4x4 is engaged the noise is not there. As much as it seems a tranny issue it doesnt appear to be. The theory is now transfer case or front diff with the iwe being an effect rather than cause. Now being torn apart and diagnosed one component at a time. 1000$ in, and no sign of a cause. This is a "love you not" moment for me and this truck.

Well after testing the front the diagnosis has come back as a tranny issue. Namely the 3-4 shiftpoint with slippage creeping in. The 3-4000$ i am likely looking at only feels better when I see the other crippled raptor on the lot with a bad tranny.

Hi kolibri,

My offer to look into this still stands; please send me a private message with your VIN, full name, phone number, odometer reading, and servicing dealer.

Thanks,

Mathieu
