I have owned both, and the Gen 2 is far better than the Gen 1 in every department, except the exhaust note. Please provide proof of your truck not having problems against tuned Gen 2s. (Anything you have). If you are really at 700 HP, then please tell us how you got there and how much it cost.

My truck makes over 570 whp on heavy 37s. It's a Stage 2 Whipple with a Gen 3 head unit and full exhaust. Currently running a basic Whipple tune so there's a lot more in it with a better tune. Have a 6.6 on the way, though, so I haven't bothered getting the tune dialed in. Certainly haven't needed to pick on the local Gen 2s ;)

The Gen 2 is a great truck guys. Really. But the engine is really small.

So I've been lurking and actively searching for a low mileage Gen. 1 for a couple of months. I'm coming from 200k mile, 2003, F350 King Ranch Crew. So I missed out on a low mile 2014 Whipple and have been scouring over the ads everyday. Was looking in the $35-50k range.

The other night the misses was on her laptop and said why are you looking at the Gen. 1 when the Gen. 2 has all this new stuff? I start with the V8 argument and she says V-what? Long story short she says for $50-60k you can get a much better/newer truck. So that is where we currently are at.

So it looks like when comparing apples to apples, the 17's and 18's are very similar. 19's have the better independent suspension but then very similar. So which year is the best bang for the buck and what should I look out for?

Hopefully the Gen. 1 guys won't realize I got out of the pen!

You are best off with a 19 or 20. It's not just the live valve shocks it's also the off road cruise which is so much more than cruise. It will do things with your wheels that you can't do manually. The 19/20 years resolved the growing pains of the 17/18. upgraded reliability by eliminating the plastic oil pan, upgraded cam system, upgraded electronics with additional options and better overall truck. 17/18 are fine but they have improved each year. At some point budget becomes a factor then it's a matter of trade offs. The difference between 19 and 20 is sync 3 update that doesn't seem to amount to anything identifiable.

I agree the engine is really small compared to the giant 6.2L... :confused:

My Gen 1 was tuned by 5-star, but I did not go the Whipple route. When my Gen 2 was stock, it was faster then my tuned Gen 1. After I added the MPT 93 PRX and the Full race IC, my Gen 2 is much faster... :cool:

I am also running heavy 37s, but the tune more than makes up for the extra unsprung weight.

yeah I guess you’re right, that whipple truck being 8 years older probably making less rwhp at this point lol

that’s what they make 500ish & 470-490ish tq

I provided very reputable proven evidence of this- show me a 700whp dyno sheet from a supercharger only gen 1 raptor & we can talk, hell- find me one making 550-600whp w/ just a blower & I’ll be impressed (Hint, don’t waste your time- they don’t exist)

so you admittedly have more than just a basic SC kit & aren’t anywhere close to 700hp & haven’t provided a dyno sheet to back up your claims as it is. Even if that IS true- you’re @ 11 lbs per HP against a tune only gen 2 carrying 11.7 lbs per hp- & while the tranny alone would make up for the very slight HP deficit, we don’t need to consider that factor because the gen2 has ya by about +100 RWTQ

I know what I’m talking about- itd take a boat load of work to crack 600whp on a gen2 Raptor (let alone get anywhere close to that on TQ) I have a built C5 Z06 that obviously has WAY less parasitic loss than gen 1 raptor being only rwd, having way less unsprung weight, a super short driveshaft & a Manual tranny. If you don’t understand how that makes a difference don’t bother replying. Now, that being said- a C5Z is also quite similar crank HP to a gen 1 raptor, and w/ cam headers & a centrifugal blower they make around 600whp on a mustang dyno.

My brother has a truck a lot like yours. MPT 93 tune, Full Race IC, Full Race catch can, Kooks downpipes, SPD adapters, Geisers, Deavers, 37s, etc.

Really nice truck. Very capable off road. But power wise we are in different leagues. He is thinking about a Gen 3 Coyote swap.

The kits are sold as "700 hp" kits by JDM and many other shops. Shelby also sold a truck with a Stage 2 Whipple and called it the Baja "700"...
