LOL. Me too.
OP - Gen 1 guy here. All Raptors are good trucks and if you're planning on keeping it mostly stock, aren't looking for a lot of power out of it, and only likely to keep it for a few years, than a Gen 2 is probably the better move.
Prices on '17s seem to be dropping pretty quick. If you can find one with 30-40k miles on it that has been trouble free, then that is the route I would go as it has already proven itself to be "one of the good ones". AG was available in '17, as well.
Then again, those LF '18s were very good looking trucks...
“Aren’t looking for a lot of power out of it”? Seems to me a) the gen 2 raptor already crushes the gen 1 in the power & esp TQ dept. & b) w/ a tune only on a gen 2 I’m pretty sure you’ll be fairly close (within 40-50) to the RWHP of a gen 1 running a damn whipple & will make MORE TQ than the blown gen 1- & regardless of being down some in HP to a blown gen 1 the gen 2 will ABSOLUTELY be faster all around. And that’s just w/ a tune.
I wasn’t even interested in a Raptor coming from GM/Toyota trucks until they redesigned w/ the 10 speed & HO 3.5- the gen 2 is better in so many ways, I mean before even getting into the mechanical stuff the gen 2s are made outta AL for starters which means no rust to worry about & lighter weight. That alone should be a non starter w/ a gen 1 if you’re being pragmatic.
subjectively Id imagine most prefer the looks of the gen 2 vs gen 1 but that’s a matter of preference I suppose
While being MUCH lighter the gen 2 is also much stiffer & has a factory reinforced frame/shock mounts - gen 1s less rigid more flex & there have been cases of failures in extreme off-roading.
the interior/electronics/infotainment/options are all noticeably improved upon.
they have a warranty
I would avoid a 2017 or early 2018 just b/c seems to be more problems w/ the 17s (& any first year vehicle as far as that goes) & the early 2018s still have plastic oil pans.
if you can swing a ‘19+ go for it but I opted not to when buying new b/c I was on the fence about the live valve shocks & assumes (rightfully at the time) that leveling the truck would be more problematic w/ the live valve type.
Lastly....just drive a stockish gen 1 against a stockish gen 2 & you’ll make your mind up easily I’m sure. It’s tough/unfair to compare modded vs modded....but like I said, while the gen 1 w/ a whipple will certainly sound meaner & make a bit more HP vs a tuned gen 2 it ain’t gonna be any quicker that’s for damn sure.
