I've wondered what effect opening the rear window would have. It might allow enough airflow to reduce drag behind the cab.

I think I remember the tailgate up/down effect on fuel economy on Mythbusters. Don't remember any tests on windows up/down though.

Yup they tested two expeditions going around an oval speedway at the same time for hours. One with the windows down, and one up with the A/C on. It didn't make a difference. But, they only carried a steady speed of 55, so it may not have been fast enough to cause drag to make a difference.

I kinda remember that episode. I thought the one with the windows down ran for longer.

I've been running around town with the rear window open, and believe it or not the mpg has improved. I'm getting about 1 mpg better with the rear window open. I think it must break the drag behind the cab.

i have only 260 miles on mine, been only able to get around 14.5 on the highway so far..... now that most of the initial mods are done i'm hoping to drive the snot out of the car starting in the morning.... memorial day snowboarding in Tahoe.....
