Based on how you say your drive, I can't believe that you do not already have a tune installed. Getting an MPT tune was the best money ever spent!!!! A ton more power and performance without all of the over revving, holding gears ridiculously long, etc... that Sport mode causes.

Does using 93 octane really increase HP that much

to be specific......87 octane decreases HP that much.

Card and Driver did a study. Engineering explained did a recap. F-150 3.5 EB was one of the test vehicles.


Bottom line....any boosted (super charged or turbo) motor needs higher octane gas. N/A, no need for it.

If he wants to continue using 87 a tune is out of the question.

Mine had its birthday this year also. I've also run the lower octane fuel and appreciate all the tips on the higher octane that I will soon try. Even with the lower octane I get very good accelaration and speed. No issues other than the ecoboost switch but its not too much of a bother to remember to press it so I'll leave it alone for now..

I love my Raptor, but man things change with 93 octane and a MPT tune. This truck is a legit beast with that tune. No need at all for sport mode. Best $700 you can spend on a Raptor IMO.

Thank y'all so much for the feedback! Definitely will try the 93 when I run through this tank... what's another $20 a tank at this point!

This is my first turbo and had not considered that. Should have known better. Was not trying to be cheap, honestly had not thought about it. Seems like it should almost be one of the things mentioned in the Raptor "Supplement" a little more prominently than it is in the "regular" F150 Manual. Bottom line, though is that it is on me for not using a little more common sense about a performance vehicle needing performance fuel...

See that there has been quite a bit of debate on this elsewhere on the site and somehow had missed the whole thing in the documentation about "recommended" vs. "minimal." Now if I could just find some hot weather around here to really notice those performance gains like the Owners Manual says... Looks like it will only be 100 tomorrow... ;)

...and will look into the tunes. Was just on the MPT site and it seems most interesting...

One thing I neglected to mention in the original post is that unless I forget to, always turn off the Auto Stop "feature." I guess if that is what is causing me to get 13.0mpg instead of 35mpg or something like that I would reconsider...naw, I wouldn't. I HATE that "feature!"

You'll probably need to run a couple tanks. The computer has to readjust itself to the higher grade fuel, it's not an instantaneous response once 93 is injected into the cylinder.

Turning off the auto stop/start won't have a significant impact on gas mileage unless you drive mostly in the city and you are sitting at a lot of red lights, or waiting on trains.

As for going to 93 octane, you may notice some additional performance gains over 87 after a few tanks of gas, but it may not be enough for some to justify the extra expense for 93 octane. That said, trust me and definitely get a 93 octane MPT tune!!!!! It will run just as smooth as stock with no downsides, but you will DEFINITELY notice a huge, and very smooth, power gain. I personally love their 93 PRX tune with the stock transmission calibration.
