So it wasn't the shoes... The shoes were chewed up but it was because the keepers that hold the shoes in place had pulled through the backing plate and all that hardware got between the shoe and the drum.

Anyway. I took everything apart and started cleaning it up.

I have Amazon overnighting a new motorcraft hardware kit because Ford dealers suck my ass.
Any thoughts on why it pulled through the backing plate?

If I were to venture a guess - the VA winter road salt degraded the pin(s) just enough for the spring pressure to pull the head(s) through. Once they pulled through both the pins (probably just one at first) and the spring clips started flying around inside the drum housing, the one that failed grabbed and clawed it's way through all the other shit in there.

At first it was just a scrubbing noise, like when a rock gets stuck against the rotor. Then, last Wednesday, the noise sounded like a bunch of bottle caps in a garbage disposal - that's when I got serious about pulling the wheels, lol.
