I've been lurking for a while but saw these posts and decided to contribute. My curtain air bags deployed Halloween weekend at Gordon's Well San Dunes in California when "side cresting" from one dune to another. Off road mode, 4wd engaged, traction control pressed one etc...I was driving with my wife and 3 yr old son through the dunes at a conservative pace. We transitioned from one fine to another which tripped the yaw sensor and dropped the curtain bags. No wheels ever left the ground and the truck was never in danger of rolling...I am figuring this will be an expensive lesson to learn for me which may have been avoided if there were a way to disable this sensor while off road. I know everyone wants to take the high road and say it is for safety which I get but I would like to disable this feature when I decide it is necessary.

For me it's not banging or jumping that's likely to set airbag off, but sudden change from one side to the other when side creating some of the big dunes, which could simulate a roll-over to some degree, so it's not really a matter of how rough the vehicle is being driven.

i dont know how big the dunes are where you are, but i have spent countless days at pismo/oceano sand dunes. unfortunately i rolled my first raptor out there. i do remember when the side curtain airbags deployed and they didnt deploy until i was almost completely on my side. my drivers side went first as i was watching the ground come within a few inches of my window. my passenger side airbag didnt deploy until we were on our roof. we were lucky enough to roll one full rotation back onto our wheels. at the spped we were going, we didnt run the risk of hitting our heads, but if a window did go, i would be thankful the airbag was there to keep the shattered glass off of me and my daughter

maybe @Trick_Raptor might have some footage he can post. i will have to look for some videos on my pc. that way you can compare your dunes to our dunes for a better idea of terrain

SdSupercrew - this is exactly my point, most people here are assuming I am thrashing the truck and putting it close to its limits. I'm not talking about that at all. The motion of going from one side of a crest to the other, at moderate pace has the potential to make the vehicle seem it is going to roll over even though the procedure is perfectly safe and under control. If I was driving the vehicle at the level that I believed there was the real risk of a roll-over, believe me I would want those airbags on. All of the other vehicles (jeeps, FJ's, etc) driving in our convoy pull the fuse). My vehicle is a US import into the UAE which means my warranty is void, so I'm really trying to avoid an expensive repair for airbags going off in what I would consider a safe manouvre. Each to his own, I appreciate the comments.

No videos but from what I recall Raully had the same issue while transitioning a dune but he did say he was airborne and landed hard. I don't remember him saying if he was in Off-road mode or not.

Raulster, thanks for the comment - so what do you do now to prevent it from happening again?
