When I ordered, my sales guy told me that the invoice price could fluctuate by a few hundred bucks. That it was Ford, not them, and that it was not uncommon. He wanted me to know so that I would not to be surprised if it happened.

For the OP, we're talking about less than 1% on a $50k plus truck. Dealers with rigs on the lot are asking several thousand over MSRP. Is it worth walking away and starting over?

Thanks for all the replies.

What I signed was a worksheet from Ford which is what it says at the top.
It's very non professional looking in terms of just having prices written down with taxes and total.

My salesman didn't tell me it could change. And yeah, $300 isn't worth starting all over again now. I'm glad i got input from all of you since I wanted to make sure that what they were doing wasn't illegal.

It was the principle of the matter which bothered me the most because it took 3 weeks of negotiating with this dealer and other dealers to get my closest dealership to finally agree on this price when they originally told me they could never go below MSRP and in fact wanted to charge me 3k over msrp in the beginning.

I'm sure I'm the type of customer they hate since knowledge is power. So I wanted to make sure this wasn't a tactic they were using to their advantage after all the trouble i've already been through with negotiating and walking away.

So I guess my last question is, if I placed an order with Ford when the invoice price was one price I guess it doesn't get locked in but it passes on to the dealer even after an order was already previously made?

Thanks guys.

Short answer, yes.

I'm not an expert. This is my first time ordering a new vehicle. But my understanding is that when the dealer puts in the order, it generates an invoice price (sort of a tentative price I guess). But the final (actual) invoice price comes later when it's built (or some time around then) by Ford. That's what my dealer guy told me. This guy seems pretty reputable and several FRF guys have ordered from him. My deal is $450 over invoice. He showed me the initial build order, but noted that the invoice price could fluctuate a few hundred bucks. But that was from Ford, not the dealer. They have no control over it. Basically, he explained to me what is happening to you right now.

I disagree guys.... When I was in corporate sales, I would generate a quote and the customer would place an order against it. Some times it took us 6 months to build the product and if during that time the price went up, we ate it.

Seems the dealer gave him a price, he put his money down and now that the manufacturer has raised his price the dealer has to eat it or go back to FORD and say don't do me this way....

You willing to pay his attorney fees? An above quote was exactly right. "Pick your battles" and three hundred bucks is not worth the effort or expense.

This is ridiculous, prices are always subject to change. I don't know what your agreement was, but unless it was a special deal you made, your paperwork should say "this is not and invoice". Price increases are passed on to the customer, if not, the dealer will have to pay it.
