Something I do to keep the mess down is use a fluid extraction tool like the mighty vac I have two. One for clean Transmission fluid only and the other for extraction of dirty fluid. Get a long enough tube go through the wheel well and remove the dipstick slide the tube in, and sucky sucky till there’s no juice left. Then remove the pan.
