So what exactly is a cam phaser and what does it do? Sounds like a Star Trek weapon. late 2019 here, hope I don't have this issue.

Cam Phasers are on the ends of the overhead cams on the 3.5 ecoboost motor. They provide variable valve timing by altering the cam phasing during different engine loads. They are hydraulically actuated by the engine oil so using the correct spec oil is fairly important. Ford's supplier of these engineering marvels produced some inferior parts that were installed mostly on 2017 & 2018 raptors. Evidently it's luck of the draw whether you have ones that fail or not.So what exactly is a cam phaser and what does it do? My 17 with 30K miles, with the service engine light that goes on and off, still runs great with the light on, damn Ford still has not released the permanent fix yet.... F'n BS.... Dealer indicate that this in fact is a cam phaser issue....
Thanks for the description. I feel bad for anyone who has this issue, sounds like a real pain!
The permanent fix was released with the SSM that has been posted multiple times. The replacement phasers are a revised design along with a revised PCM calibration.
Do you know it is a PERMANENT fix? Can you show us where you found that this is a permanent fix and there will never be any other cam phaser failures? When you mentioned the cutoff dates before, there were others here who had the updated parts and still had this same problem again. How do you explain that?
