I ran across this, as I had questions about the start and stop as well. I’m sure some will shoot holes in it, and maybe rightfully so. However if what he is saying is true in theory it does make sense. Will this have an effect on cam phasers? I don’t know. Draw your own conclusions

Does anyone think this is why Toyota stuck with timing belts for so long?

I was surprised to see my 18 has this auto stop/start. First time I saw my oil pressure drop at a traffic light I freaked. I also wonder about oil coking in the turbo lines. I have a turbo timer on my sti to minimize that from happening. Auto stop/start feature seems like it will creat more problems than it worth.

Truck had 3k miles, nasty rattle on start up
100% stock, happened after first oil change
First dealership said was within spec
Second dealership knew right away what it was.
4 weeks waiting on parts
Another 2 weeks because they scratched it and had it repainted.

Truck has a coolant smell and a consistent tick. Dealership that did repair states they pressurized the cooling system and found no leaks.View attachment 116233 And the tick is within spec.

At this time I’m waiting for the coolant light to come on to prove there is a leak somewhere.


This is the most consistent sequence of events I've seen. IE, it was great until the first oil change AT THE DEALER, then problem started. They're putting the 5w20 oil in it for sure. I don't care what the work order says, they're f*cking it up. THEN the goons are so incompetent that they f*ck up more sh*t while "trying" to repair it. Moral, stay the f*ck away from the dealer service dept.

The cam timing actuators (phasers) definitely don't seem to be robust enough to withstand even slight oil starvation. I think they suffer some wear in a critical port or check-valve and from then on they leak down, such that they are not controlled on startup. We know that they quieten down and play nice afterwards, so it sure seems pretty simple in my experience. If someone would swipe a set (not just one) of failed ones and send them to me I can do a detailed analysis and likely come up with a reasonable fix. It will take Ford another few years if they ever research and fix the problem. If they can get away with only a few failures statistically, then they will not fix it.

There were similar cam timing actuator failures on the Mazda 2.3 and the aftermarket stepped up and built some bullet-proof actuators. Mazda finally came out with upgraded actuators as well.

Did Ford already attempt to somewhat fix this? I thought I saw where someone said they changed the part number for the cam phasers?

The dealers seem to only employ flunky’s. I had the dealer spray undercoating, what a disaster/mistake that was!!! My truck is back to the dealer for the third time for them to correct the garbage work they did. It is so bad it’s like sabotage. F’ing unreal!!!!
