Are there any particular symptoms to look for ? I have been noticing some clanking sound randomly on start up. But truck seems to drive ok. Reading about this failure kinda makes me worry a bit. 3 weeks into ownership and just don't want to deal with this nonsense ...

I had mine replaced under warrant at 11,300 miles. When I walked out to my truck at the dealership to leave, I heard the noise again and brought the SA out to hear it. We could not replicate it. Took it to the tech, could not replicate it. They said it was probably an exhaust leak and to just drive it for 500 to 1000 miles and it should clear up. It never really did and then 2500 miles later, the turbo went out on the same side that the "fixed" the cam phasers. Took it back to them and Ford denied my warrant bc I had an intercooler (Cobb) installed.

They did not prove the IC caused the problem. I am beyond pissed and will be taking further actions.

There are literally dozens of threads on here about it, with the same few slap ***** trying to convince everyone that every truck has, or will have it. For 99%, or more, it's a non-issue.

Nope, it's the same parts going back in that already failed. There will be no fix for this engine's timing issues. Ford will move onto an entirely new engine/cam phaser design instead. That's just SOP now. The days of using the same basic engine design for 20 years and refining that engine as they go is over. The new engines for the next F150 are already being tested. They just don't have the resources to go back and re-engineer the existing engines failure areas- it's cheaper just to warranty the bad ones and move on. Chances are one warranty repair will get them past the 5/60K warranty and then they don't care anymore.

The guys without issues will tell you how great this engine is until the cows come home. Even though it has no history of being a reliable design, and it's predecessor was not a reliable design either.

That is just plain wrong, and you're spreading misinformation. That doesn't help anyone.

When a multiple vehicles experience the same concern or failure, engineering monitors the concern to determine if it's simply a coincidence (large batch of repairs, then nothing) or a pattern failure. Once a trend is identified with a certain percentage of vehicles (very small percentage overall), engineering is required to investigate the concern, determine root cause, and resolve the issue.

In the case of the cam phasers, the phasers and PCM calibration were identified to be the root cause of the concern. All 3.5 GTDI (both standard and high output) built after April 8th 2019 have the revised phasers and new PCM calibration. For vehicles built before April 8th, the dealer will replace the phasers with the updated design and reflash the PCM.

It sucks that anyone needs to have the front of their engine torn down, but there is a solution. If anyone has questions about this please quote my post and I can assist.

We all know an intercooler will not cause a turbocharger failure unless there is evidence of debris entering the turbocharger from the installation of the aftermarket intercooler or a leak in the charge air system. Dealerships have a poor track record on warranty issues; I've seen them install new engines under warranty in modified vehicles (Shelby Raptor) and others claim nothing is warrantable because of a cat back. It'***** and miss.

In your case, call the Ford Customer Relationship Center (CRC). The phone # is in your owner's manual. Tell them that you need a second option on the vehicle concern because you don't believe the modification you did resulted in the failure. Ideally request a Ford Field Service Engineer (FSE) come and inspect the vehicle; they are much more knowledgable than dealership employees and can override any dealership decision. In most cases it is extremely difficult to get FSE involvement, but for higher profile customers (Raptor) they will often accommodate.

Do you have documentation that you can share, specific to vehicles built after April 8, 2019, having revised phasers and new PCM calibration? And what exactly was calibrated in the PCM? I really hope this to be accurate, considering I have May 2019 build date!

If this is correct, and the cam phaser issue has been resolved for the vehicles built after April 8, 2019, is Ford installing the phasers with the updated design (part #) AND reflashing the PCM for vehicles coming in with phaser issues? It appears that some have had the phasers replaced twice, and continue to have problems.

If PCM calibration is truly part of the root cause, I wonder if the new factory calibration carries over to those with aftermarket tunes? It appears this would be a good way for Ford to easily deny cam phaser warranty claims for anyone with an aftermarket tune.
