Cam Phaser/ Engine Failure Poll

This sucks! I heard the cam phaser rattle at cold start yesterday. My Raptor was built in July-2019 with 6800 miles. I've already had two oil changes with Penzoil Ultra Platium full synthetic oil thinking this would help, it didn't. I had my dealer order the parts just now, he told me they won't even give him an ETA on the parts it's so far out. he said they redesigned the phasers in Sept 2019 but who knows how many engines were sitting there with the old phasers waiting to find a home. He said it's ok to drive it but Damn Ford, this is my third Raptor and every one has given me some problems. It's frustrating to know this problem has been going on for so long. Ok, I'm done venting.

Please post a video if you can. There is no documentation of a part number change in Sept 2019; sounds like the dealer is just guessing.

I have a 2019 built after the issue was supposed to have been fixed on the production line and I had the exact same work done that you show, but unfortunately my truck still sounds like a diesel when I start it up, so it is going back in tomorrow morning to be reassessed.

I'm sorry, I've been trying to upload a video I took on my I-phone this morning with no luck. I did send it to my Ford dealer and he confirmed it is the cam phasers.

That does, unfortunately, sound like a phaser not parking properly. Have you checked your oil level by chance?

I actually changed the oil at 1500 miles with full synthetic and changed it at 5,500 miles. yes, i checked the oil level and it's fine.

I had mine replaced under warrant at 11,300 miles. When I walked out to my truck at the dealership to leave, I heard the noise again and brought the SA out to hear it. We could not replicate it. Took it to the tech, could not replicate it. They said it was probably an exhaust leak and to just drive it for 500 to 1000 miles and it should clear up. It never really did and then 2500 miles later, the turbo went out on the same side that the "fixed" the cam phasers. Took it back to them and Ford denied my warrant bc I had an intercooler (Cobb) installed.

They did not prove the IC caused the problem. I am beyond pissed and will be taking further actions.

UPDATE:

I paid to replace the turbo myself. Not long after, the engine started throwing more codes and going into limp mode. The codes were related to low oil pressure. I took it to the dealership and they tried to blame it on my parts again. So I took all the parts off except the downpipes. They finally took the project and broke down the engine. They had the truck for a month. Then they let me know they were waiting on a new engine. I finally got the truck back last week with an entirely new engine. All was covered under warranty. What a PITA but I am glad to have it back.

My 2018 makes some noise on cold-startup, nothing I considered to be a concern, all dies down within ~5 seconds, once oil gets flowing.

As an experienced V8 dude, and not saying an NA-V8 = TC-V6, some noise while things get moving is normal.

I've heard video/audio of the cam phaser failure. There's no gray-zone or room for opinion in most of them. If you have a problem (or don't) you'll know it!

Yes. Build date cutoff was 10-Jul-2018. All vehicles after that build date have the updated parts and calibration.

My build date was October 2018, last week of production I think, this is good news to me.

I cannot comment on the exact failure mode that caused the issue, as I am not a Ford Engineer. All I can tell you is that the phaser part number and PCM calibration were updated, and I have not seen any concerns on vehicles built after that date.

Ruh roh! 9/2018 build date here. After 27,000 miles, I think i have the cam phaser rattle. If it isnt cam phasers then its something else definitely making a little cold start racket for about 10-15 seconds. I very well could have had it for a while. I remote start my truck 99.99% of the time where i cant hear it.

I guess i'll be overly dramatic like everyone else and sell my truck.

Just kidding. I'll continue to drive it just as I have been until my next dealer service and get their 2 cents on it.

If you're hearing it for 10-15 seconds, you most likely don't have it. Sounds like normal warm up. Take a video and post it after a overnight soak.
