If you're hearing it for 10-15 seconds, you most likely don't have it. Sounds like normal warm up. Take a video and post it after a overnight soak.

Exactly. Phaser rattle lasts literally no more than a few seconds at the most.

Ruh roh! 9/2018 build date here. After 27,000 miles, I think i have the cam phaser rattle. If it isnt cam phasers then its something else definitely making a little cold start racket for about 10-15 seconds. I very well could have had it for a while. I remote start my truck 99.99% of the time where i cant hear it.

I guess i'll be overly dramatic like everyone else and sell my truck.

Just kidding. I'll continue to drive it just as I have been until my next dealer service and get their 2 cents on it.

What you are most likely hearing is turbocharger wastegate rattle (normal) or the High Pressure Fuel pump (HPFP). The wastegate rattle disappears as the metal components expand due to heat, and the HPFP quiets as the engine idles down. Combine that with the cold start emissions strategy (catalyst light off requirement within XX time) and there are a lot of systems operating at once. Its the norm for any modern turbocharged direct injected engine, however the noises tend to be more audible on pickups due to the open inner fender wells.

I'll try to snag a video for you fellas today. I dont recall hearing these noises when I first bought the truck but if its normal, then its normal. It sure makes a lock of racket though. My experience is turbo diesel trucks though and they probably make enough engine noise by themselves that I wouldnt notice any type of wastegate noises.

2018 23,000 no issues except for high pressure fuel pump recall which put it in limp mode. Tech changed it at dealer per recall and over tightened the bolt and it snapped driving a week after it was “fixed” Galpin ford California

Posting for my Cousin. Same truck as mine....2019 with less miles(7300) was at the Dealership for a month and just got it back. New head gasket, new passenger turbo and it still makes a weird whistle noise so its going back to the dealership and he's trying to get them to buy it back.

Head gasket and a tucbocharger? Sounds like a gross misdiagnosis by the dealership...

What was the original concern?

I also posted this in the other cam phaser thread...

Just had the cam phasers replaced on my truck last week. I walked in on Tuesday morning without an appointment, and I got there as soon as the service department opened because it was my day off. I showed the service advisor this video and he said "Yup, more cam phasers. We just finished two trucks." They gave me a 2020 Explorer Limited with 20 miles on it that had just been brought in as a new loaner vehicle, and then they took my truck into the shop. My truck was done in two days but it took me 4 days to pick it up due to my work schedule. However, I made them aware of my work situation in advance so it wasn't a problem. I returned the loaner Explorer (I put about 350 miles on it) and jumped back into my truck on Saturday morning. My truck has a little under 24k miles on it.

Nice to hear you got a loaner, especially a new one. Did they repair your truck and resolve the issue?

Well, my truck is scheduled to go in tomorrow for the cam phaser replacement. Does anyone know if the latest cam shaft sprocket PN's ending in the letter "C" are indeed the true fix? With my truck being a July 2019 build and having less than 7,000 miles, I don't believe Ford has a "fix" for the problem, are they just trying different phaser designs hoping to find a fix? FordTechOne - any comments would be appreciated. Also, they're going to have to disconnect the battery while performing the work, does this mean my transmission has to "re-learn"?
