Cam phaser dilemma

That sure don’t sound like cam phaser rattle. More like a cracked piston.

I'm going to have to disagree on this one. If it was a cracked piston, I would hear it during cold idle as well. The knock does go away after applying some throttle.

I actually just went through this process. I bought a 2018 with just over 56k miles on it back in October. I didn’t notice anything until a couple weeks later when the weather cooled off that I had the rattle at startup and then the ticking at idle. It was out of the factory warranty but I was luckily still within the 30day 1k mile warranty I got from the dealership I bought it from where they cover 50% of parts and labor.

I took it to the local Ford dealer and they did the overall vehicle inspection and as expected I had the phaser issue. I got half the money out of the dealer I bought it from as noted above. Then as I’ve read others have done, I called Ford customer service since this is a known issue to try to get them to contribute to the cost. After several phone calls and several weeks they ended up covering about half of it, so I really had to pay nothing. I also got them to include a 3year 36k extended warranty which I was really happy about. I’m just bringing that up in case you have any issues utilizing your third party warranty. It was a hassle but worth it since it worked out for me. From what I’ve read have had some success with this as well.

I had it repaired at my local Ford dealer and after having it back a couple weeks, knock on wood no issues. Like others said they’ve done so many at this point I wasn’t too worried. I was more concerned with them scratching the paint or something leaning over it all day long for three days.

One recommendation from me, I had them replace the valve covers since they were off anyways and you’d only be paying for the parts. Pretty sure I had the hairline crack in the driver side cover that was leaking oil which I believe is common.

I would also have them put on a new water pump and thermostat housing. I have no idea why that isn’t standard with this repair but at least in my case it wasn’t. Again the labor is already in there so you’d just be paying for the parts.

Some additional info/ideas:

I'm planning on keeping this truck for 4 years or so. My 3rd party warranty is good for 4 years/48k miles. So if the phasers don't get worse/ cause driveability issues over that time period, I could bring it in for a phaser replacement right towards the warranty expiring, and then trade it in right after.

I totally agree with the advice of taking it to a Ford Dealer. I also agree as was said by others that there are many successful Cam Phaser replacements every day that we don’t hear about. I myself owned a 2016 F150 2.7 liter that needed cam phasers. My Ford dealer replaced them and I never had another issue. Cam phasers are not unique to Ford or our Raptors and they are not some “voodoo technology” that nobody knows about.

My cam phaser rattle started suddenly on my 2019 about a month ago. I was a couple of weeks from the 60 month powertrain warranty expiring. I took it to Corning Ford (Corning, CA) and a week later it was all fixed. I've used them for some of my Superduty issues as well. They seem top-notch. Not all dealers are stealers or incompetent.

It seems that the majority of these pop up in the mid 50k mile time frame usually right under the warranty.

UPDATE: Dropped the truck off at the dealer today. They said they will be taking care of the problem themselves, without going through 3rd party insurance. It may be a while before I get the truck back, as it will be processes by their shop that does used vehicle reconditioning, and not their service department. They did give me a loaner Escape to drive until all the repairs have been completed though.

No. They said they will "make it right" at no cost to me, including free loaner vehicle (a new Ford Escape) for however long it takes to fix the truck.

UPDATE: Dealer will be replacing all cam phasers. While they have it apart, I will be paying for additional parts to be replaced, including 4 VCT solenoids, 2 belts, water pump, cam chains, chain tensioners, chain arms and guides. $1220 grand total for parts, with labor being free.
