Great thread. So does a professionaly built motor loose the 3-5 sec start up rattle? or is that just a ford 3.5 thing these days.

I have no idea on the trans capabilities. I know the chevy version of the trans holds 650/650 no problem but both the ZL1 and the mustang are far lighter cars. I dont think anyone has pushed the raptor far enough yet to find out. That being said I think 4wd launches are going to be a bad idea no matter what and you will never see me trying one.
So far I have 250 miles on the engine. I have been manually shifting it trying to keep it out of boost during the break in period. The motor spinning at 3500-4k rpm its hard to even feel it. The balance seems way better than stock. The motor feels smoother. Hoping to get to the 500 mile mark by the end of the week. I think my next step will be a larger in take fuel pump and larger low side injectors. I really want to see what this thing will do on E85 with the stock turbos. That may be as far as this motor ever goes.
You do not want to shock load the locker in the stock axle. The spiders are "flexy" and will eat themselves.What about just locking the rear? With it being so light in the back I’m just wondering how useful the extra power is from a dig. I already can spin pretty easily on a stock motor. It would be nice if the drivetrain could be upgraded to handle the extra power and get it all to the ground.
Hey Chris. Glad you have the engine running well. Once through break-in (IE break-in procedure is complete and you have a chance to get a tune dialed in) any skirt noise you hear from the pistons should disappear. We use a FSR forging or forged side relief piston which has a smaller skirt and load on the major thrust faces of the cylinder walls. This combined with a .030" pin offset pretty much eliminates piston slap, but I will be really curious if you still have any noticeable cold start piston noise once you have say 5000 miles on it and it is dialed in. Many times we also find that there is a bit of a cold start shutter do everything relearning, plugs should usually be gapped a tick tighter than normal.I had the phaser rattle before and it was bad. I dont hear anything like that anymore but its still not a silent start up from cold. I would assume part of that is due to the forged pistons and rods. That being said its still quieter than my stock motor way even after the phaser issue was fixed.
Very nice. Any idea how much power the drive train components can handle? What’s the weak link there?
What about launches in the different 4wd modes? I’m wondering what that can handle before things start breaking.
Finally got a the few last little things resolved on the engine. The breather from the intake to the evap canister got left off and one of the check valves for my UPR catch can was in the wrong line. No more check engine lights and it running great! I should have 1000 miles on it by the end of the week so I can start to feed it some boost.
Yep that undertaker truck is pretty cool. he was at 700+ at the wheels ,plus he did some speed runs to 160mph in 4wd . Ford limited the HP potential by making the ecoboost the only option. If the 5.0 was optional you would see plenty of 700+ raptors out there.
