Same thing happened to my 2002 f150. I went will all aftermarket parts and it was about 2500 including a eaton auto locker. That was gears, diff, master rebuild kit, and install. At the time(about 4years ago) eaton did not make a E locker diff for the 9.75 rear end.

I had a conversation in regards to your problem at dinner..
I will have pricing for you tomorrow for a complete assembly.. You will probable have 2 options replace what is broken. You could go with stock "10" parts or upgrade into "14" axle shafts..(bigger)....
I'll P.M. you tomorrow with my phone # and we can talk about it..
Is your pin in 2 pieces or 3 ?

Thanks Wiz. I only see two pieces in the pictures but I believe there are 3 pieces. I spoke with the selling dealer and they said that this failure mode is caused by turning the vehicle sharply when the diff is locked.

That was what I suspected, and why I asked if the diff was locked when the failure happened. Could it be that the diff was locked and you simply didn't know?

What I can tell you was the diff lock lever was in (not engaged) and the diff lock light was not on. I was also not in off-road mode as I was getting on the highway.

I did ask the dealer if they thought that the diff lock might have engaged on it own. I was told that they had no idea.

I have not yet locked the diff since I purchased the truck two days prior to the rear axle breaking.

Wiz--you are good troops for helping out the OP. Just make sure he does it right. Lot of metal was getting ground up from what I could see! Bummer---one reason I don't buy used vehicles. Never know what the previous guy or gal did to the vehicle or did NOT do to the vehicle..
