The 1k break in period before towing has nothing to do with your engine and everything to do with your diff. Towing and spirited driving are completely different. Your diff needs time to go through repeated heat and cool cycles to fully harden. Towing places loads on your driveline that is physically more demanding and wears your diff in a sightly different position.

Having said that, 1k is on the conservative side, most of the hardening takes place within the first 100 miles. After 500 miles it is generally accepted some light towing for short distances isn’t too much of an issue. Our diff covers hold quite a bit of oil and dissipate heat pretty well.

Depending on how old you are, there was talk years (decades?) ago in car enthusiast circles the best way to break in an engine, with many folks quoting the method race cars used to get the job done (a la “drive it like you stole it”). There are so many reasons that logic doesn’t apply to production vehicles, and your diff is one of them.

I have to drive my 22 in a few weeks (hopefully) from east coast to west coast. Its about 3,000 give or take. I'll try to go easy on it the first 1000 miles as per owners manual but after that I plan on getting on it a little bit.

Towing or drag racing I would think is the worst for any type of new vehicle.
I did this as well - 2990 miles from NYC to SoCal. Tell ya what... it is extremely difficult to "vary the RPMs" in OH, KS, and MS where you just want the boredom to stop!

Yeah, namely race vehicles don’t have the same reliability and durability priorities of street driven vehicles.

To be fair, I bounced off the rev limiter leaving the stealership parking lot... because I inadvertently shifted to manual mode instead of auto/drive mode on the transmission. DOH!

Um, on a 2022? You can't accidently shift into manual... Manual mode requires pressing a button.

Jen Too for me, not Jen Tres. manual mode on Jen Too is one position rearward of the “D” on the shift lever.

I hit 117mph with 20ish miles on the clock. Break it in like you drive it.

I’ve never kept a vehicle long enough to worry if proper break in matters.

Improper break in will show up immediately... it's not a longer term failure.

Glazing cylinder walls will result in oil consumption and smoke.

Gears will break short term...etc.
