They are used to REALLY light up trails. Great for distance as they are up high and XL80s are REALLY powerful.

So please school me on what these hood lights would be used for?

Not just that. Our excellent lighting vendors have already made the point, but, as an end user I can say that if you’re looking to really light up trails, the pillar mounted lights are less obstructed by ground or headlight level clutter and are really blasting out farther. If you have close in lighting addressed, pillar mount xl80’s are a great addition for off roading.
They’re not even funny. You light these up on the street and there better not be any reflective surfaces in range or you’ll be seeing spots.
