They are used to REALLY light up trails. Great for distance as they are up high and XL80s are REALLY powerful.

So please school me on what these hood lights would be used for?

The idea behind a-pillar lighting is to have lighting mounted at a higher vantage point on the vehicle whereby offering a longer throw or forward projecton of usable ighting. Since a-pillar lights sits higher than lights mounted on your bumper or in the bumper openings, the a-pillar mounted lights provide the ability to project light further due ot the fact that they physically sit higher.

One of our most highly recommended lights for the a-pillar spot is the Baja Designs XL80. At almost 10,000 lumens per light, they offer an incredible amount of light. Being able to project the light further helps justify the investment in superior lighting. If you're looking for a ton of light down range, the XL80's on a-pillar mounts is definitely one of the best ways to acheive that. Other lights like the Baja Designs LP4, Squadron, Squadron XL, Rigid D Series or numerous other cube series lights also work quite well for a-pillar lighting.

Yup. Light bars are great up top (in spot patterns I feel) as they throw light WAYYYYYYY down range, but they come at an expense. Pricy and mounting can get tricky since you have to drill into the roof. Pillar mounted lights bolt right on and offer you some range without breaking the bank or giving you a hard install. Most kits can be installed in under an hour with some basic hand tools, especially the Baja kits since they offer plug and play harnesses for our truck (which I previously linked)

Not just that. Our excellent lighting vendors have already made the point, but, as an end user I can say that if you’re looking to really light up trails, the pillar mounted lights are less obstructed by ground or headlight level clutter and are really blasting out farther. If you have close in lighting addressed, pillar mount xl80’s are a great addition for off roading.

They’re not even funny. You light these up on the street and there better not be any reflective surfaces in range or you’ll be seeing spots.

Agreed you cant go wrong with XL80's mounted on you A- Pillar.
I even like them more than any Other BD product I run on my truck.

XL 80 Racer editions worked very well for me on pillars mounts for 5 years. Not much glare off the hood as they are a narrow Spot beam. XL Lasers are very cool but very expensive and going on my truck later this month, feedback to follow.

Do the amber rock covers work as well as just getting the amber lenses? Debating as I’d like to have the option of running clear or amber with a quick swap.
