Anyone encounter a U1013 DTC ?

Soooooooo, Long story short ( pun intended), The steel frame that supports the one-piece front end on my truck was contacting my sdhq switchpros mounting bracket under the hood.

When the one-piece frame hit the bracket, the bracket would hit the main feed cable to the power distribution block. it eventually wore through the insulation and began shorting.

So far, I have replaced the battery, the pcm relay, every single fuse, replaced the cable that goes from battery terminal to power distribution block, replaced the batter terminals, rechecked all the grounds, tried to trace the harness as best I could to look for any arcing/singing/damage to the harness.

Now, the truck will crank, but will not turn over. ( the starter will fire and try for 15 seconds, then stops).

I am kind of at my wit's end and the only code that I've gotten is U1013, which leads me to believe the PCM may be fried.

Has anybody ever seen this? Should I just buy a new PCM? Anything else that I could try? ( short of replacing the entire harness).

@FordTechOne any ideas? ( or any guidance on diag?) I highly doubt that any ford dealer wants to work on my junk.

For giggles, I looked it up on the internet, lots of things to check apparently. I'm guessing you opened up the main harness where it was shorting out and inspected every wire? I hope @FordTechOne can save you some short cuts in diagnosis. :bawl:

U1013 Possible Causes

What does this mean?
  • Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM)
  • Transmission Control Module harness is open or shorted
  • Transmission Control Module circuit poor electrical connection
  • Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

yes, fellas, I know what the code is "supposed to" mean. I don't have IDS, but I do have a snap-on scanner.

The actual code when translated "could be" the harness or "could be" the PCM. it also "could be" a non-committed nvram write to either the PCM or TCM.

I was just trying to see if anyone had encountered it before, and if so, what the most probable fix is. I'm already planning to use a new harness when I do the motor swap in a couple of weeks. Getting a harness is easy. getting a pcm and then getting it programmed without taking the truck to a dealer is proving to be more difficult.

Yea, dealer is definitely last resort with a modified vehicle.

I doubt U1013 is setting due a failure of either module. That DTC is basically saying the receiving module (PCM) successfully received a networked message from the TCM, but the data contained within that message was not valid. That is most typically the result of additional DTCs stored in the sending module (TCM).

Does the Snap-On scan tool have the ability to run a Self Test on the TCM?

Sounds like a typical fuse 27 issue...haha sorry but I just had to do it....

On a serious note what about the possibility of and internally broken wire? Thinking excessive heat and arcing on a 20-22 gauge wire could look good from the outside but have internal damage. Possible ohm/resistance/continuity test on each of the wires in the effected area?

Apparently fords service bulletin for a 2016 f150 states replace the TCM

38F12315-77FC-47CC-B82E-30AF22BA691B.jpeg

Also possibly something about:
-a shift solenoid
-A valve position switch
-Engine shutoff solenoid
-gas recirculation sensor circuit
-Ambient air temp sensor

Sounds like all of these possibilities revolve around sensors. It’s unlikely you fried a sensor so my guess is you have an issue with the harness itself, would def look at continuity checks.

I may be looking in all the same places you have already but you never know.

it does. I'll have to try that.
