Just started a plug/wire change. Bought 16 autolite APP5363 plugs. I checked gaps when they arrived. Every one was .38. So i figured the $2 gap tool was off. I pulled the oe first plug and gapped it at .44. Im not gapping 16 plugs. Am i an idiot? What am i missing?!?

Autolite claims those are gapped at 0.051" from the factory https://www.autolite.com/parts-finder/APP5363/contact-us I am not sure how you got a set that was that far off.

FYI a set of feeler gauges have a whole mess of uses, including this and can be had for under $5:

On gaps: Ford says 0.041-0.047" is acceptable. 0.038" probably won't hurt anything, gap is more of a problem when too wide than too narrow. With the old coil packs etc run em' and you will likely not see a difference. NGK calls for 0.030" on their plugs.

Be careful using that POS gapping tool, it scratches the electrode making hot spots and decreases the life of the spark plugs.

.30 to .32 is the what most are gapping at with a Tune on the forum using Motocraft and NGK

+1 for a set of feeler gauges, way better than one of those gap tools. And I’m trying to remember what I gapped mine at...I feel like I split the difference at 0.044, but it might’ve been 0.042.

Vendor sent me out 16 new plugs. Told me the ones i had were “mis-boxed”. All the new ones came in at .41. Gapped them all a 44/45. Only used the feeler to check. Gapped with another tool. Had 2 different kinds of plugs on top and bottom. Weird

Looks like these were changed out by a lazy at some point? The one on the left is a large electrode and the one on the right is fine electrode platinum , which is stock. I will guess that the fat electrode plugs were on the top, since those are easy :)
