I had a friend ... sort of anyway, just out of high school. He was a bit of a screw up and as an 18 year old male, was paying about 1800 bucks / year for full coverage insurance on his mom’s insurance policy because (at least in MD) it was financially impossible for an 18 year old male to get insurance through a major carrier. $1800 / year in 1988 money was a lot of money for a stinkin’ punk on E3/E4 enlisted pay... just sayin’.
I knew he’d filed a claim for damage, hit and run I think. What I didn’t know is he’d also fired a theft claim for his --shagged-- tires and wheels. I strongly suspect he had them “disappeared”. Unfortunately what happened next was nearly fatal. He was pole position at a traffic light when a PG county cop came up behind him, lights blaring. The cop ordered him to clear the intersection over the PA. it was a red light, 2nd time was to the effect of “Move or get arrested”. He moved and was immediately Tboned at 60 mph. Lucky to have lived. He looked like he’d gone more than 2 minutes with Mike Tyson, and badly screwed up his ankle. To boot, he was charged with running the red light, and automatically at fault for the collision.
This was not the straw that broke the camels back however, that came 2 claims later on a truck he got which he rolled.
Then, one day we were doing car work outside his house and his mother lit into him like something you’d see on an episode of Cops. They cancelled her policy due to excessive claims. She was able to appeal the cancellation, but had to pitch him from the policy. Only nobody would insure him. She managed to get him covered but he had to sign a document waiving any ability to claim anything non collision.
