Thanks in advance for any help. I was up in the snow last week. Parking in 4x on the snow/ice. When cranking the wheel and moving forward or back, I get binding, which I researched can be normal. However, I got a huge pop/crack/whatever at the same time. Obviously, I can reproduce on dry cement. It's at the dealer, but they are unsure. They are loosening everything and retightening it.

Any clue? This is far from normal. I understand binding on dry or wet, but this was slick snow and ice. Wheel was cranked all the way.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Dealer has no clue. Greg, it slips and reengages only with a sharp turn, or would any resistance cause that?

There could be several causes of it loading up and slipping.. Tight turns, unequal traction surfaces during acceleration (basically torsen working and transferring the torque), contamination in the IWE hub causing slow or partial engagement of locking collar.

There is trend developing pointing to the torsen shock loading the locking collar causing accelerated wear and failure of IWE.

As far as a solution, there are no simple fixes (changing front end to dana 80, removing torsen and replacing e-locker). Still working on a simple bolt on/remove and replace option..

So, the Raptor has been at the dealership for two weeks. Nothing yet. First, they told me that some sheet metal was bent and binding the LCA and might be causing the grinding. When I explained to the svc manager and the mechanic that the Control Arm doesn't move laterally when the wheel turns, they looked stunned. First truck they've ever worked on, I guess...

Both agreed that the sound is not normal, but didn't want to research the IWE locking ring and said they would have Ford come out to look at it. That was last Friday. As of today, they said that ford still hasn't come out to look at it, and told them over the phone that it is normal. BS. As they even said, that is definitely not normal.

The truck is just sitting.

I do not try to park in 4WD no matter what the surface.
This or my previous 4WD will bind when under 5mph.

Hope it does not co$t you.

this, going super slow in 4wd in anything but super deep snow, or mud, the tires wont slip and you will get binding. just the way 4x4 works. my ranger does it to,even on glare ice, 2" thick.

If they've keep it that long, I hope they're making the payment on your truck for this month.
