I think Wranglers are purchased and done up for the look of it. Same goes for the Jeep truck. They never have been good driving vehicles on road. Tons of them down here. But we have the weather for it.

Anyway.....Put a bed cap on and you sort of have an SUV ;)

rugged SUV? I have both a 4Runner and a Jeep SRT.. granted my Runner is a 99 lol but still a Runner is a Runner at heart.

sucks that no one vehicle can really check every box on have on your list, but that's no fun lol. everyone who see's my garage says the same thing... " THATS your dailys!?!" HAHA

My wife talked about selling our 99 Runner and buying a TRD Pro Runner, but at the end of the day we don't need every vehicle to do what a Raptor does. so she went with the Jeep and let me tell you, not only has it been trouble free over the past 3 years of ownership, it's a F@%KING riot to drive. I love everything about it.. ZF8 transmission is second to none, chipped it's 400 wheel horse, room for 2 80lb dogs and 5 people.

Your frustrations over Toyota not offering anything performance wise is the main reason I refuse to buy anything they make. I give them a ridiculously hard time about their lack of passion in their line up, maybe their next gen Tundra they're testing right now will be bet

the first time I went to buy a Raptor I bailed on it since I was living downtown and in a condo. didn't have the need for such a truck, or a truck anymore so I sold my lifted GM and bought a 2011 Subaru STi for when I was home. loved every minute I was behind the wheel but once i got a dog it was time to get a truck again. eventually I bought a gen 2 Raptor then got rid of it for my Gen 1.

I've wanted a Raptor since the second it debuted in 2009.. so the day I finally took one home I was on cloud 9. it puts a smile on my face every single time I'm behind the wheel.

K223 has a good point, put a cap on it. I've been looking for one right now so I can keep my dogs in the box with more gear, as I now have a daughter and don't want them in the cab licking her face constantly lol.

If I were in your shoes... I'd look long and hard at the new Bronco (which you said you plan on doing) since you want an SUV, spy shots show a wide one running around so I'm hoping they drop a Raptor version asap. A Raptor with a cap is a great alternative and you won't be disappointed. either way I would definitely ditch the Runner, I know they're amazing but you'll be much happier with a Ford Performance vehicle.

I hear ya, no doubt the 4runner is underpowered. Main reason I am considering switching. A V8 in the 4runner (even the 5.7 offered in the tundra) would have gone a long long way and I bet many consumers would go for it. In addition, If the 4runner would have an option for a performance engine, it would have been amazing.

crap if they put the 5.7 in the 4Runner with an 8 or 10 speed, I’d probably buy one, but it ain’t gonna happen sadly.

I like the concept of the rugged, reliable, old school 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, but in reality, they just ain’t that great to drive around town. The Raptor is **** around town and it does well off-road too.

The focus on this thread is currently more on why I had considered both or the comparison between the two, as opposed to best ways to trade in/sell a recently purchased new car, which is more what I was going for.

I agree the raptor is way more vehicle than the 4runner. No argument here. But I happen to know folks who considered the 4runner, as well as a Jeep wrangler, also a tacoma, and the raptor. I think there is a certain persona with those type of vehicles that appeals to a personality type.

I've had pickup trucks most of my life, but lately have been driving SUVs since they are a tad more family friendly. Also have a 4x8 utility trailer, so the bed isn't that big of a deal. But you can't really compare to the performance of the raptor, and really that is what I am interested in.

I have considered the explorer ST, but I want something that can take me off the beaten path more than an explorer can offer. Maybe with the new bronco coming out in the next few months, assuming they have a Ford performance version, could check the boxes that the 4runner doesn't for me, but only time will tell.

New guy to this forum, just wanted to introduce myself, also to get a dialogue going about trade in of newer cars, not really about getting beat up for how the 4runner compares to the raptor.

I was highly considering a 4Runner prior to buying my raptor. I fell in love with the 17 cement gray TRD pro all stock, gorgeous vehicle.

I don’t think you’ll have an issue crossing over. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think you’d lose a tad bit of cash, but I do know the market of 4runners seem to keep their value just as a raptor does it seems.

How many kids ya haulin? The SCREW has so, so much room in it. Fitting five in the truck would not be an issue at all.

I have a wife and three kids, the third row option in the 4runner comes in real handy. Kids running three wide in the back seat leads to arguments and fights.

We also will use vehicle to tow boat and crew long distances, which makes the extra interior room helpful as well. But I am considering making them suck it up in order to keep thier dear old dad happy :)

Thanks, I appreciate your insights.

The SRT Grand Cherokee is intriguing, and they can be had for pretty reasonable prices in the slightly used market. But it won't really check the " off road " box. Sigh, no perfect vehicle out there for DropTheMike :(

Fights and arguments? Really does this happen in the back? Lol. Well there is enough room in the back of the Rap for each to have there own mobile device and ample floor space. But I can only imagine.

The 5.7 L V8 tundra engine and a 8 or 10 speed transmission would have solved all my "problems". Oh well, nothing is perfect i guess.
