GEN 2 2019 Overlanding Build

I’ve been sharing progress on Reddit/Imgur and figured it was time to get some real feedback.



We (wife, 11 y/o son, and I) love camping and have enjoyed the truck for traditional tent camping with some off-roading adventures.

I have been following the overlanding community for a while and was eyeing a Leitner Designs rack with Decked drawers and a CVT tent setup but an opportunity to pick up a used KB VooDoo rack and Yakima tent came up and I couldn’t refuse the asking price.



We took our first camping trip with the rack and tent last weekend and it was AMAZING. We all fell in love with the concept and have been planning for future trips since.

The current kit includes boards and a hi-lift + off-road kit for recovery (go argue with frogman about the jack if you want)




And just today I added a pair of quick fists for utility




Still super excited about all this and would love some [helpful] feedback and lessons learned from anyone out there with some experience.

Love how it fits flush/slightly below the cab roof line when stowed. Added weight, and may have more drag in the area directly behind the truck, but more streamlined airflow over the bed...curious if you get better or worse gas mileage with the rack/tent in place while cruising.

I definitely feel a bit of drag, not much, but it’s my daily driver I noticed a difference. I’m sure that translates to mileage with some math and science, but I haven’t really pushed it too far to notice an obvious change.

I’m driving up to Vegas this weekend and just topped off tonight so I’ll report back on how it goes.

Which did you end up getting? The steel or aluminum? Looks like the 10” version as well?

I have the 14” aluminum that gets here Monday and I’m pumped to put it together and get it on there.

Good eye, it’s the 10” steel.

Did you get the c-clamps or how are you gonna mount it? I just drilled holes into the lip of the bed and it’s on pretty solid with the 4 bolts.

Love the set up, not sure if you get much rain where you live, but I always kept a long thick rope and an extra large tarp, me and the kids would tie the rope (1`thick) between two large trees and hang the tarp over it, would keep the rain off the tent, campfire and chairs. I know space is critical, so we always spent the time folding the tarp up correctly and you can pretty much shove it inbetween something. I used to tie the rope up tight and stuff it inside the front skid plate.

I got the clamps, yeah. I also have the tonneau brackets since I still want to use my retractable cover from Pace-Edwards.

Nice. I keep a tarp and a bunch of bungees in the rear underseat storage alongside tools, first aid, reusable grocery bags, and a blanket.

Of all the things I thought to shove back there, some damn rope somehow got missed.
