I had to visit the dealer 5 or 6 or 7 times (lost count at this point) for a ticking sound in the door panel. First few times they said they couldn't duplicate the problem but they heard it each time I took them for a test drive. Last time I even printed step-by-step instructions on how to fix it. The tech assured me that all steps were performed. Lo and behold, ticking noise was back right away. Decided to fix it myself and when I pulled the door panel off I found NONE of the steps I gave the service manager were performed.

I have a lot of patience and always say please and thank you. Anyways, my factory warranty just expired late last month so I will not be back at any Ford dealer anytime soon.

Called local dealer, they said no loaner unless I had an extended warranty with one included, and they could not look at it until Wed, maybe tomorrow.

Called 2nd closest dealer and they are closed due to snow.

So I went outside to hook up the 5star and read the DTC and nothing was found. So I put it back to stock since I anticipated bringing it to the dealer and now the Orange Wrench Light is off...and it's not in limp mode.

I took it out on the roads, which are worse than last night and went from 4x2 to 4x4 High several times and then headed out on the Highway and got it up to 70 and did the same thing from 4x2 to 4x4H with and without my foot lightly on the gas, and nothing...then I took it to an industrial park and hammered it down a side road that's all snow covered and into a huge parking lot where I did 3 consecutive mid throttle drift doughnuts with the only light coming on from the Advanced Trac indicator...

So I brought it back home and will pray nothing happens the rest of the week b/c we have Feb. vacation all next week in NH, and the snow around here is insane right now...

I know I can't bring it to the dealer with no lights lit for codes b/c they will just tell me they can't diagnose what's not there...

You switched from 4x2 to 4x4 and back severals times when going 70mph (even though you let off the gas)??

To clear the wrench, turn the key on and off a couple times without starting it.
Probably something wrong in your transfer case. Sounds like the vacuum and IWEs are working properly.

For now, keep it under 70 in the snow while in 4x4.

If the wrench popped up, there should be a code stored.

Thank You for your donations to Avery. We hit our goal!

^ How long ago did you add the 5Star/tunes to the truck before this 4x4 error appeared?

5Star Tuner has been in the picture now since April of 2014, so almost a year. Just drove out to NY and back last week with my 2 place trailer and 2 sleds and zero issues. Had it in 4x4 on snowy roads doing well over 70...as did everyone else.

Yes, I brought the truck out on the Highway, which was snow covered, and I went from 4x4 back to 4x2 back to 4x4 all while letting off the gas each time, and then I did the same thing, but kept my foot on the gas, although I was barely touching the gas since it was all snow covered, but you can shift these trucks into 4x4 from 4x2 or vice versa at any speeds...and I was simply trying to see if the truck did not like a particular action, but again it was perfectly fine.

I am going to the local dealer tomorrow so they can do a code search, which he said takes a while b/c of the scanner they use getting deep into the system I guess. I detuned it back to stock, and let him know the wrench is off and the truck is running normally again...at least for now.

Isn't the transfer case located up front right behind the front diff? I ask b/c the noise I originally heard that led to the next noise and the subsequent Wrench and On Screen Warning for the 4x4 System malfunctioning was out back...

Thanks all for your feedback and follow up.

Umm, the transfer case in behind the transmission which is behind the engine! So probably beside your ass while you are driving.

Wow. I would never shift on the fly on this truck or any truck. It will be interesting to see what the dealer finds.

Not sure what's with the UMMM, but thanks, I will have them look into that.

As I originally stated this happened while cruising on the highway, NOT while shifting on the fly or anything like that. I was probably doing 55-60 when this happened.

Are you saying that if you were on the highway and you came up on a snow squall you would pull over, put your Raptor in Park, then shift into 4x4, and then drive off?

Where does it say you cannot shift into 4x4 or from 4x4 back into 4x2 on the fly??

A quick search:

Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF) System

The Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF) system consists of the following components: •Mode Select Switch (MSS), located on the instrument panel
•TCCM , located near the passenger kick panel
•IWE solenoid, mounted to the cooling fan shroud
•IWEs , located at each front wheel hub
•Transfer case assembly (includes shift motor and synchronization clutch)

Vehicles equipped with an ESOF system allow the operator to choose between 2WD and 2 different 4WD modes. The transfer case is shifted electronically based on the MSS position. Under normal driving conditions, the transfer case is in 2H (4X2), but when desired, the operator may shift into 4H (4X4 HIGH) or 4L (4X4 LOW). The operator can shift between 2H and 4H at any speed. To shift into 4L, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 5 km/h (3 mph) and the transmission in NEUTRAL.
The transfer case is equipped with a synchronization clutch which is located inside the case. The synchronization clutch is used to synchronize the speed of the front driveline with the rear driveline during 2H to 4H shifts.

Nothing wrong with shifting on the fly. I'm not sure what the max speed is for shifting on the fly though. I probably wouldn't do it at 70. I just make sure I'm not accelerating or turning before switching and all is good. For now. Knock on wood.

Keep your tuner handy so you can pull the codes if you're able to replicate the issue. This will help troubleshoot it. Or as joe said, the dealer should be able to see what code it threw.
