Nothing wrong with shifting on the fly. I'm not sure what the max speed is for shifting on the fly though. I probably wouldn't do it at 70. I just make sure I'm not accelerating or turning before switching and all is good. For now. Knock on wood.

Keep your tuner handy so you can pull the codes if you're able to replicate the issue. This will help troubleshoot it. Or as joe said, the dealer should be able to see what code it threw.

Thanks man. And I will be bringing it to the dealer tomorrow and have them go through and look at the Transfer Case and all that's related to it.

Will update, and thanks again.

I shift into 4x4 on the fly and let off the gas too as the system is designed to do so but I usually do it when going no more than 50mph. So if I was on the highway and came up on some snow, no I would not pull over but would decrease my speed and then switch to 4x4.

But it the manual states any speed, so be it. Funny when I saw your post, i went online and was looking at the manual and couldn't find what you posted. I suck at searching....

It's your truck and you can do what you want but I would never shift on the fly. There are known problems/issues with Ford 4x4 system.

Regardless, please report back as I it will be interesting to see what damaged occurred.

The reasoning behind not switching to 4x4 on the fly is because the IWE teeth will grind when traveling at speed. Ideally, you want to stop to minimize the grinding and slowly roll forward once 4x4 is activated to ensure that the teeth set in properly.

^ as stated, not the best idea to throw it in 4 wheel drive just cause you can. In emergency situations, sure. But like Rick said, try to slow down quite a bit first.

To me it sounds like the drive system wasn't completely engaged while at speed. Then at some point it finally engaged. But in doing so the system read some slippage and tossed the warning / wrench. Which means something wasn't right.

I'm also curious if the dealer finds anything.

Thank You for your donations to Avery. We hit our goal!

While driving home to MA (on pavement) from our house in NH during a snowstorm today I had the truck in 4x4 high b/c the roads were a mess...about 1/2 way through the trip...100 miles roughly...I heard a clunk from the rear of the truck while on the highway (no acceleration or anything going on...just cruising) and then about 5 mins later it happened again and the Dash GUI lights up with a big WARNING about 4x4, but it explains NOTHING, and won't let me see the Warning, but simply tells me that there is a Warning...and an orange Wrench comes on and stays on...

Definitely keep us posted, bosssho; if you need my help after getting a diagnosis, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership. I'll be happy to do whatever I can to assist.

No problem, and again, just for the record, I did NOT shift into 4x4H on the way home...I was always in it from when I left my house in NH to get home to MA...the roads were bad so it was not as if I was shifting back and forth or anything like that.

Sounds like the problems are listed below having to do with the IWEs...and again, normally I do NOT shift on the fly, but if I do, which I have, it's going to be at speeds less than 10 mph and I ALWAYS do let off the gas.

In the case of troubleshooting yesterday I was trying to duplicate what had happened, and ironically shifting back and forth at 60-70 did not cause any problems...the truck ran like a top.

Very good to know, thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

I would say that's not it only b/c I was in 4x4H since I left my place in NH...so I can't see it clunking in after over a 100 miles...but who knows...and when I did shift into 4x4H in NH I was stopped in my driveway...

The truck is at the dealer now and I am in my awesome FWD Ford Fiesta...no, not the Ken Block AWD Turbo version unfortunately...and I am trying to remain optimistic they will find something, and I can go back to having 200% confidence in my truck. :)

Truck is coming back today. New windshield is going in now too as I had a large crack spread from two rocks...and the poor guy was losing his mind b/c apparently the Raptors have something specific on the top inside between the adhesive and the glass, but I said reuse the current one so he should be all set.

Also, worked out a deal on an Extended Warranty so that's done too.

The code that was stored was a communication DTC code...P193C...and had something to do with the Steering Wheel Angle. He said it was MANY Network Traffic items happening simultaneously that crashed the system for a moment and caused this DTC to appear and create the error. I said so my Raptor had a Windows Blue Screen of Death moment...he said pretty much.

I asked about the IWEs, Transfer Case, Axles, etc...he said all was MINT, and they do a whole report card from the TC, IWEs, Drive Train, Suspension, etc...and everything looked great.

So hopefully just a simple software glitch...and that's that with that. :)
