The 6.2L is a brand new motor they brought in to replace the V10 on the Super Duties. It brought better power and fuel economy. I wasn't just talking tires killing MPG, it was the SUM of everything listed. The 6.2L actually gets damn good gas mileage for the conditions. I average 13-14 in daily driving and I have seen 17+ cruising on the highway. However, you cannot cruise over 65mph, it just starts to plummet. I hope they keep the 5.8 away from the Raptor. The 6.2L is a much better solution for a truck.

In case you missed the reason the 6.2L exists:

ROBUST, FORD TOUGH: ALL-NEW 6.2-LITER GASOLINE ENGINE COMPLEMENTS 2011 FORD SUPER DUTY | Ford Motor Company Newsroom

Also a thread with Q&A from the Lead Engineer on the 6.2L, discussing the design of the motor and how it's been designed for peak fuel efficiency.

To sum it up, It's not the 6.2L killing MPG. It's the Raptor.

The 6.2 "Hurricane" engine was in the works for a long time, and for years it was rumored as the next big thing to hit the trucks and the replacement for the 5.4 or a top engine choice above the 5.4. I think the rest of the engine sweep (3.7/3.5TT/5.0) came around a little later and with a different approach (aluminum blocks, 4v heads, DI, etc.) and Ford had already a substantial amount invested in the 6.2 so they continued through with it, but it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the engine family. I think it was on borrowed time since day 1.

I like how you say you hope the 5.8 stays away from the raptor, yet know absolutely nothing about it. All we know so far is it's going in the 2013 shelby and is 650 hp with a blower. It should easily be able to be reconfigured for 450 hp as N/A, with a lighter block, smaller displacement, and better economy, making it a perfect replacement for the 6.2, and one that fits in with the rest of the lineup rather than the odd ball.

The 6.2L is an oddball because it's the only truck motor in the F150 line up. That motor was built to be a Truck motor and it's primary focus is in the Super Duty lineup. The others you list started as car platforms. Continual improvement on the 6.2L or an ecoboost have a better shot at the Raptor, than the 5.4/8.

Now you're putting words in my mouth :/ The 5.8 details are already out. The 5.8 is the 5.4 with a larger bore, stronger crank allowing a 7k redline, Ford GT cams, higher compression, and other tweaks to support more hp. It's headed in the direction of high revving race track performance.

And engines can be multifunctional, not just for a single platform only. Just like the 4.6 and 5.4. The 4.6 and 5.4 were developed into work horse lined platforms, yet also developed into high hp, high revving, mustang powerplants between the 03/04 cobra with the 4v supecharged 4.6L and the 07-12 shelby with the 4v supercharged 5.4L. Changing a few variables can yield two very different results. And with the new drivetrain lineup, the results are even more impressive. The new 5.0 has surpassed the N/A 5.4 in practically every area in the trucks, and is a downright incredible platform in the mustangs. Absolutely no reason why the 5.8 wouldn't follow suit as well.

In for an oil change this morning. Transporter had two SCrews. The Tux Black went to Webb Ford on Indianapolis Blvd. The Blue Flame went to Art Hill Ford on US 30.

Didn't really see any difference in the bump stop area...

The first transport dropped a Flex and three Edges. He was buttoning up the trailer when the second transport rolled in; Blue SCrew top center looking like it just won King of the Hill. The Black SCrew was lurking in the middle of the lower rack.

The second driver was delivering an STX, so I got to look at the Raptors for awhile. First driver was saying "those things are quick! Said he'd once delivered a Raptor when there wasn't anybody at the dealership, gave him a chance to drive it around some; he still had a grin at the recollection.

Side by side, I'd probably take the Blue Flame over the Tux Black. The Blue needs to have the fender flairs painted and probably powder coat the wheels.
